Fantasy Magazine, December 2015 (Queers Destroy Fantasy! Special Issue) | Catherynne M. Valente, Christopher Barzak, Matthew Cheney, Liz Gorinsky
5 posts | 4 read | 1 to read
LIGHTSPEED is an online science fiction and fantasy magazine. In its pages, you will find science fiction: from near-future, sociological soft SF, to far-future, star-spanning hard SF-and fantasy: from epic fantasy, sword-and-sorcery, and contemporary urban tales, to magical realism, science-fantasy, and folktales. Funded as a stretch goal of LIGHTSPEED's Queers Destroy Science Fiction! Kickstarter campaign, this month we're presenting a special one-off issue of our otherwise discontinued sister-magazine, FANTASY, called Queers Destroy Fantasy!: an all-fantasy extravaganza entirely written-and edited!-by queer creators. Here's what we've got lined up for you in this special issue: Original fantasy-edited by Christopher Barzak-by Catherynne M. Valente, Kai Ashante Wilson, Carlea Holl-Jensen, and Richard Bowes. Reprints-selected by Liz Gorinsky-by Caitlin R. Kiernan, Austin Bunn, Shweta Narayan, and Nicola Griffith. Nonfiction articles-edited by Matthew Cheney-by merritt kopas, Matthew Cheney, Keguro Macharia, Ekaterina Sedia, Mary Anne Mohanraj, and Ellen Kushner. Plus an original cover illustration by Priscilla Kim and original interior illustrations by Goni Montes, Odera Igbokwe, Sam Schechter, Elizabeth Leggett, and Vlada Monakhova."

I‘m so glad I finally read this. The fiction selections are strong, be they original or reprint. Each one left me eager to push a little further into the magazine and see what else the editors had for me. The nonfiction, unfortunately, skews towards the sort of stylized yet academic prose I find damned near unreadable, but I still gleaned some nuggets of insight from that section. Highly recommended to fans of short SFF.

mreads Have you checked out Clarkesworld ? Great SSF and free online and they also do audios of all the fiction each month on a podcast of the same name. Been meaning to recommend it here 6y
xicanti @mreads I used to read them pretty often, but I drifted away as I became more aware of how I dislike reading long pieces online in this post-Google-Reader world. I completely forgot about the podcast! Thanks for the reminder. It might just be my way back in. 6y

My sore, sore throat demanded a softer breakfast: yogurt, superfruit berries, and coconut chai.

I‘m back into magazines for my daily short story, since there‘s no better month to (finally) tackle all the Queers Destroy issues I‘ve had sitting around for three and a half years. I used to be good at buying fiction magazines; I‘ve always been terrible at actually reading them.

cobwebmoth Hope your throat feels better soon! 6y
xicanti @cobwebmoth thanks! I‘ve been hitting the lozenges pretty hard. 6y

Our latest #litereads selection and our final pick for #asianheritagemonth is The Padishah Begum's Reflections by Shweta Narayan. This historical fantasy story looks at a real figure from the Mughal Empire through a queer lens and a fantasy twist. I look forward to seeing what everyone thinks of this story. Any magazine or anthology will of course have stories you like and stories you don't. My favorites here were Catherynne Valente l'e and the article about Ellen Kushner's Riverside stories, which I read as a teen & must revisit. But I enjoyed all the stories and the art was gorgeous, too!

Finally got an ereader, so I have been reading a story from here every night.
