Not as good as I had heard but will probably read more of the series because it shares with me the path my ancestors came to America and to Minnesota.

Taking a lunch break from working at home to sit on the back patio with my book and a glass of iced tea. And since I have the type of fair skin that is more suitable for living in the Scandinavian countries described in said book, my trusty can of sunscreen is also by my side.

Read while wearing SPF

Starting this four-book series (which the author intended to be read as one work) about the Swedes who fled religious persecution and poverty in Småland in the 1850s and emigrated to America‘s upper Midwest. My husband‘s ancestors made this exact journey. My own great-grandparents emigrated from Sweden to NYC. In 2019 we took a heritage trip to Sweden to see the places where our families came from.

Read on the porch

You know you've read a book a lot of times (and that it's well written) when you have a pretty accurate dream about reading a specific part. Last night I definitely dream-read the section on the ship on the Atlantic, when Kristina is so embarrassed to be visibly pregnant without culturally appropriate attire. (this book is labeled wrong in the litsy library, Lannestock is just the translator @litsy)

Swedish literature - where eating rice pudding before it's ready is a major plot point and results in a character's death.

Love reading about Swedish life in Smaland - makes me want to learn a lot more about my family and their life there during this time period!

A) this book fact is fucked and lists the translator first.
B) #booktober day 22, immigrant stories. The Immigrants Suite by Wilhelm Moberg, photo conveniently missing book number two, which is the one actually called "The Immigrants". About Karl Oskar and Kristina who move from Sweden to America in the 1850s, after crop failures and hunger kills their oldest daughter at age four. These covers are really cheesy, but the books are classics.

While I've read more exotic #immigrantstories , I've decided to show two that reflect my own family's heritage. Hopefully I'll be able to add Moberg's last volume to next year's reading list. Moberg did so much research while in the US about the Swedish immigrant experience, and Faragher's history of the Acadians is great. My grandmother reported that if she spoke French in school like she did at home nuns would hit her with a ruler. #booktober
