In this prequel to The Black Stallion, we learn the story of the Black before he was shipwrecked with Alec Ramsay. Born in the mountain stronghold of Sheikh Abu Ishak, the colt shows great promise. During a band of robbers attempt to steal him, the colt escapes and learns to survive on his own in the high mountains. Will he ever find his way home? From the Trade Paperback edition.

First read of 2018 in the bag! I really enjoyed this little throwback to my childhood...although I have to say, this prequel doesn't read like a kid's book, or even YA. It's pretty dark and weirdly spiritual. Even though (spoiler alert) we all know the Black is going to survive his trials, I still felt uneasy about the abuse he suffers along the way.

monalyisha Love throwbacks! Will you be joining @Clwojick & I for the #ThrowbackReadathon (Jan 25th - 28th)? 😁 7y

#FunFridayPhoto Favorite Book From When You Were Young: This was my first ever hardcover purchase! I saved my money and special ordered it from my small local Indy when I was in 6th grade. I was so excited, and Walter Farley did not disappoint. @Liberty

marie3blue I loved The Island Stallion Races best of all the ones that I read in this series. I watched The Black Stallion movie over and over as a kid. Also loved the Misty books. I was a horse loving kid. :) 8y
Ellsbeth @marie3blue That was a good one! I read Marguerite Henry, The Saddle Club, all the Farley books, and whatever horse books I could get my hands on. 🐎 8y
