6 posts | 20 read | 1 to read
The hit series returns to charm and inspire another generation of baby-sitters! The Pike family is taking a vacation to the beach, and Stacey and Mary Anne get to go along to help out! Two weeks of sun, sand . . . and the cutest lifeguard Stacey has ever seen! Mary Anne says that Scott the lifeguard is way too old for Stacey, and besides, she shouldn't be ignoring the Pike kids to spend more time with a boy. But Stacey is in love. What could possibly be more important than following her heart? The best friends you'll ever have--with classic BSC covers and a letter from Ann M. Martin!

(1987) I've never read a BSC book, figured it wasn't my thing, but I saw this one in PEN America's list of book bans and picked it up out of curiosity. Per PEN, it was banned from libraries in Missouri's Fox C-6 School District. The reason for the ban is unclear to me -- maybe it's because a 13- year old girl talks about her "skimpy" bikini? I notice someone has strategically placed a sticker on the cover of my library's copy...

#BannedBooks

Smrloomis Huh, sometimes book bans are so hard to figure out. I personally find the BSC stuff to be so…bland. Just meh. 2y
swynn @Smrloomis Yeah, my take on SBC is about the same. No shade intended: I'm not in the target audience. It's the ban that has me fascinated. Because as book bans go, this is one of the more puzzling ones. 2y
mandarchy I have the graphic novel in my library (K-5). A teacher has asked me to stop checking it out because there's an image of people kissing. I just bob my head and smile. Like kids haven't seen that! But romance is rare in primary/middle grade lit. 2y
swynn @mandarchy " ... because there's an image of people kissing." smh. I guess keeping that out of library books will postpone middle schoolers' curiosity about kissing? I am the opposite of a child development specialist, but I'm pretty confident that's not how it works. Kudos to you for working the front lines in that battle. 2y
mandarchy @swynn yes. I find it hard to believe that book banners never kiss in front of their kids. Or didn't start kissing or crushing for a kiss in grade school. 2y

An iconic Stacey book. Also Mary Anne is badass in this one: she stands up to Stacey for ditching the Pike kids to hang around the lifeguard, and she asks a boy out on a date!

Lol at how the cover artist drew Scott the hunky 18-year-old lifeguard to look about 30!

annahenke This cover art is sooo hilarious 3y
LiteraryinPA I was thinking the same thing looking at the cover! 3y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @annahenke all the original BSC cover art is a good time, but this one takes the cake! 3y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @LiteraryinLawrence they often make the 13 year olds look like 17 so I guess they had to age up the older teen guy lol 3y

Stacey gets sucked into a “summer love” and leaves Mary-Anne to pick up the slack...not cool, Stacey. Not cool. I get a kick out of these and they take me back.

This one was pretty basic, certainly nostalgic for how silly we can be about “love” as kids, but also kind of eye-rolly b/c of that as an adult. Still fun tho. 3/5 ⭐️

Another interesting entry. Stacey is a little too boy crazy sometimes. But everything works out in the end, thankfully.

JackOBotts Love that you‘re reading these! I‘ve thought about revisiting them...I always loved the Super Specials! 7y
LeahBergen Does that lifeguard need his shirt undone down to his navel?? Love it! 😂 7y

I've been listening to a fun podcast called The Baby-Sitters Club Club, in which two guys hilariously dissect each of the books in Ann M. Martin's popular series. I devoured these books as a kid. Stacey was my favorite. She was mysterious and from NYC, plus she dotted her i's with hearts. What's not to love? #tbt

ReadingEnvy Did you have a babysitter box? I did! 8y
BookBabe ❤️ Stacey was my fave too! I had that book in the upper right. Used to be so addicted to those. 8y
shanebeth @ReadingEnvy oh I'm sure I tried to put one together at some point! my friends & I tried to set up our own baby-sitting club too. 😂 8y

shanebeth @BookBabe I still have all my books. I know I should give them away, but I just can't. 8y
Reviewsbylola These books were everything to me growing up! I loved all the girls for different reasons but Stacy was probably my favorite too. She and Claudia were just so cool. 8y
BekahB I need to listen to that podcast! I was obsessed with The Babysitter's Club books! My cousin and I built our own babysitting kits based on suggestions from these books. Love it! 8y
shanebeth @Reviewsbylola oh yeah, they all had their charms. the 1st BSC book I ever read was about Dawn, so she's a fave for me too. 8y
shanebeth @BekahB give it a listen! one of the guys read the books when he was a kid too, so even though they poke fun, it's done with love. 8y
