This was really more between a pick and a so-so, but I‘d be willing to try the second in series. Set in 1590 London, young Dr. Nicholas Shelby blames himself and sinks into despair when he loses someone he loves. He begins to see a pattern on several bodies that are washing up from the Thames and sets out to investigate with the help of new friends who‘ve helped him struggle back from the brink. This book is dark both in its murders and the 🔻
The third book (to date) in the Nicholas Shelby series, this is a sixteenth-century spy romp split between Marrakech and London. The settings are clearly and atmospherically created. There‘s plenty of murder, plague etc in the plot, but it seems strangely slow-moving – it really does take a long time to get going, and I‘m not sure that the wait‘s worth it. It just left me a bit cold.
