pickCollins has an affable style that‘s easy to absorb and process. His poetry has the observational feel of one who is listing their day to a friend, only to realize something interesting about it in hindsight. As a whole, Whale Day is a fine set, but upon returning it to the library I found another, Horoscopes for the Dead, and noticed his style hasn‘t changed much in the 9 years between publications. Which is to say he‘s good but sorta one note.
pickI checked this out from the library because I wanted something short and funny. This book came up under humorous non-fiction, so I tried it. It‘s not funny, but at least it was short. Collins‘ poems don‘t require a lot of work to understand, and that‘s nice. Several of these poems are about death, but it was nicely handled and not morbid. He‘s good at making you expect one thing at the start and delivering a nice something different at the end.
Visiting my old neighborhood in Chicago, Roscoe Village, and had to stop by my fave independent bookstore here, @RoscoeBooks ! And then of course HAD to leave with lots of books ☺️

pickIn his latest collection, Billy Collins's trademark wit and humor are in evidence, but he is more focused on his and others' mortality than usual. Billy Collins is always a delight to read and that holds true here, too. His voice is always welcome. [I received an advanced e-copy through Netgalley.
