Exogene (n.): factor or agent (as a disease-producing organism) from outside the organism or system. Also: classified Russian program to merge proto-humanoids with powered armor systems (slang). Catherine is a soldier. Fast, strong, lethal, she is the ultimate in military technology. She's a monster in the body of an eighteen year old girl. Bred by scientists, grown in vats, indoctrinated by the government, she and her sisters will win this war, no matter the cost. And the costs are high. Their life span is short; as they age they become unstable and they undergo a process called the spoiling. On their eighteenth birthday they are discharged. Lined up and shot like cattle. But the truth is, Catherine and her sisters may not be strictly human, but they're not animals. They can twist their genomes and indoctrinate them to follow the principles of Faith and Death, but they can't shut off the part of them that wants more than war. Catherine may have only known death, but she dreams of life and she will get it at any cost.

? This is a Sci-Fi/Mil-Fic novel set in the future where wars are waged over mined metals. All-female super soldiers are bred in tanks with a three-year expiration date and inculcated with a variant form of Christian faith that should keep them fighting and loyal to the cause before they "spoil."?

Dogearedcopy Stylistically, the writing is interesting with the rhythm of prayers, the mysticism of hallucinations, and the slaps to our sensibilities as we are given glimpses into the barbarism of war. This installment features a Germline soldier named, “Catherine” who writes of her journey of faith and acceptance as she tries to outrun her fate. 👇 (edited) 6y
Dogearedcopy However, I would definitely recommend the print over the audio. This is early in Bahni Turpin's career and her delineation between like characters in dialogue is poor, and the corrections were badly edited in. (edited) 6y

🎧 Starting the second book in the Subterrene War Trilogy in audio (narrated by Bahni Turpin) - This is from the POV of a genetically bred female soldier who has an expiration date and who *should* have a programmed sense of faith that will enable her to fight hard and meet her fate with equanimity.
