Human Remains | Elizabeth Haynes

Human Remains is a deeply disturbing and powerful psychological thriller that will have you checking the locks on your doors and windows. Human Remains, the latest novel from crime-writing sensation Elizabeth Haynes, is a powerful and chilling thriller that preys on our darkest fears, showing how vulnerable we are when we live alone, and how easily ordinary lives can fall apart when no one is watching. How well do you know your neighbour? How well do they know you? Would they notice if you lived or died? Police Analyst Annabel wouldn't describe herself as lonely. Her work keeps her busy and the needs of her ageing mother and her cat are more than enough to fill her time. But when Annabel discovers her neighbours decomposing body in the house next door, she is appalled to think that no one, including herself, noticed her absence. Back at work, she is compelled to investigate, despite her colleagues' lack of interest, and finds data showing that such cases are frighteningly common in her home town. People, of all ages, all dying of natural causes. Seemingly. All forgotten. But for Annabel. As Annabel is drawn deeper into the mystery, she comes face to face with her own demons and her own mortality. Would anyone notice if she just disappeared? Elizabeth Haynes is a police intelligence Analyst. She lives in a village near Maidstone, Kent, with her husband and son. Elizabeth is the author of two other books, Into the Darkest Corner which was Amazon UK's Best Book of the Year in 2012, and Revenge of the Tide. textpublishing.com.au 'A thriller star on the rise.' This is dark & disturbing, especially the parts from the villain's POV. He is messed up! But calling him a villain isn't quite right. Up until his last "project" is there anything illegal about what he does? Is it even wrong? It feels wrong but it's very grey & that ethical dilemma is the best thing about this book. It feels a little long & a little detached. It's hard to be in Anabel's head too as her reactions are so unusual. Soft pick.

When I got home I could smell the trash cans on the cold air, a faint bad smell that made me wrinkle my nose... and then the dragons arrived. 😄

#ReadingResolutions #CreepyCharacters😱It's been going on five years since I read & reviewed this creepy book, but one of the characters, Colin, still creeps me out.😱Is he just a weird creepy loser or is he somehow involved in the pattern (24 in 9 months) of dead bodies found decomposing in their homes that a police analyst spots after she discovers her own neighbor's body? Either way, reading the chapters told from his POV made me want a shower.

#TBT to 3 years ago. I read & reviewed this mystery-thriller by one of my favorites, Elizabeth Haynes. The best, scariest thrillers feel real, like it could happen & Human Remains builds a sense of dread as Annabel finds her neighbor's body then discovers while researching at her police dept. analyst job that there are similar cases in her borough--24 in 9 months. Good, creepy, graphic at times. Paired w/ quick bread on my blog review-link below😱
