I'm giving a 30-minute memorized lecture tonight on Classical liberal education. As such, I'd like to recommend a book I read regarding one of those educational pillars: architecture. "Bricks & Mortals" is a deeply philosophical & astute analysis intertwining specific landmark buildings, their architects, & the cultures in which they were erected. It's not a long book, but an intensely esoteric one. Highly recommend it! Anyone into architecture?

Jessicav Oho I need this immediately. 8y
Dogearedcopy I love architecture; and in grad school, took a couple of special classes in the subject as it related to Medieval and Early Modern European norms and philosophy! 🏛⛪️🕌 8y
melbeautyandbooks Sounds fascinating. Hope your lecture goes well! 8y
[DELETED] 3323341091 good luck with your lecture! yes, architecture is fascinating on multiple fronts. here are my 3 favs: Bachelard's discussions on our perceptions of space is grand; Jacobs's analysis of the century's urban planning is woefully spot-on; and LeFebvre's philosophical analysis of the relationships between mental and real (eg physical) spaces is engaging. 8y

Larkken Awesome! 🙋🏻 do you have a favorite? Mine might be art deco, if we're going modern... 8y

ValerieAndBooks No academic background in it, but I love it! I'd much rather take vacations in cities and say "that's Richardsonian Romanesque " than go out in nature and say that's "a wild, rare buttercup". ?I'm sure your talk went well @mrbook! Also taking note of your book recs @magslhalliday @fern 8y
