Deciphering an ancient alchemy book is more difficult than Zoe Faust bargained for. If Zoe isnt able to unlock an unusual alchemy books secrets soon, the French gargoyle will remain awake but trapped in stone forever. When Zoe gives herself a rare night out to attend a classic magic show, she realizes the stage magicians are much more than they seem. A murder at the theater leads back to a string of unsolved robberies and murders in Portlands past, and a mystery far more personal than Zoe and Dorian ever imagined.

I really enjoyed this second book in the accidental alchemist series. It centers around a new mystery while continuing a plot line from book 1. I really like the characters and that there‘s a live gargoyle in the story. Pandian infuses the story with the right amount of quirkiness.

Everyone has gone to bed. It‘s just me, Zoe Faust, a couple magicians, a gargoyle and the Christmas tree. #fridaynightreading

This is the 2nd book in the Accidental Alchemist mystery series. Zoe is still on the search to save her French gargoyle Dorian from a life trapped in stone. There is a magician in town and Zoe thinks he might be a murderer - and an alchemist. Can she trust him to help her save Dorian? I liked this book but at times it did drag on. I liked how we learned about where Dorian came from. I wish I had a Dorian in my life fixing me healthy meals!

Oh, you know, this was the mindlessness I needed and it worked. I don't usually like "cozies" because I can't past murdered person + cupcakes/knitting/witchcraft = coziness. It's that murdered person that's the hitch BUT this series is quirky in ways that suit me, including a living gargoyle who is a vegan French chef. Not consistently great writing, but you know what? I love Dorian the gargoyle and I'll be reading the next one......

Overall I honestly enjoyed the story however the constant reminder of Zoe's sensitivity to caffeine and her vegan lifestyle became quite annoying, border lining on preachy.

It won't keep me from finishing the trilogy however I am sure I will be similarly annoyed with the third book.

Plowing through my next audiobook while getting ready for my next show.

I am enjoying this second novel however I have to admit that I forgot how much Zoe annoyed me whenever she mentions anything food (or health) related (both are mentioned a lot).

CherylDeFranceschi I love your work! Fantabulous! 8y
