Crazy Rich Asians meets Gossip Girl by way of Jenny Han in this knock-out debut about a Korean American teen who is thrust into the competitive, technicolor world of K-pop, from Jessica Jung, K-pop legend and former lead singer of one of the most influential K-pop girl groups of all time, Girls Generation. What would you give for a chance to live your dreams? For seventeen-year-old Korean American Rachel Kim, the answer is almost everything. Six years ago, she was recruited by DB Entertainmentone of Seouls largest K-pop labels, known for churning out some of the worlds most popular stars. The rules are simple: Train 24/7. Be perfect. Dont date. Easy right? Not so much. As the dark scandals of an industry bent on controlling and commodifying beautiful girls begin to bubble up, Rachel wonders if shes strong enough to be a winner, or if shell end up crushed Especially when she begins to develop feelings for K-pop star and DB golden boy Jason Lee. Its not just that hes charming, sexy, and ridiculously talented. Hes also the first person who really understands how badly she wants her star to rise. Get ready as Jessica Jung, K-pop legend and former lead singer of Koreas most famous girl group, Girls Generation, takes us inside the luxe, hyper-color world of K-pop, where the stakes are high, but for one girl, the cost of successand lovemight be even higher. Its time for the world to see: this is what it takes to SHINE.

The book I read today is Shine by Jessica Jung. I thought it was really interesting because I didn‘t know much about K-pop before reading it so I learned a lot. It was a bit slow paced, but it‘s definitely worth it.

AK29 Ok so now I am reading the sequel, bright and it is really good 2y

Travel days are good for powering through audio. I‘m not the target audience for YA, so a lot of the interpersonal problems made me cringe a little. But the look-behind-the-curtains of the K-pop world by an insider made an intriguing and high-stakes background for teen romance and frenemies alike. Thanks to Libro.fm for the ALC: I see it took me so long that the sequel is out! (Same reader, which is good - she was excellent.)

I really enjoyed this novel. It was very fluffy but scratches the surface of k-pop. I think the next will be really good.

Given that Jessica Jung spent more than half her life in the KPOP world, the fact that the majority of this reads like Gossip Girl fan fiction is super disappointing. I had such high hopes.

It‘s no secret to anyone who knows me that I‘m a massive K-pop fan (16 years and counting!). So it makes sense that I was very excited to read Jessica‘s book and get the tea. Overall, the tea was lukewarm, but it was interesting to read a book about the trainee life from someone who lived it. I would recommend this to my fellow K-pop stans who want a little insight on our idols.

I just finished this as an audiobook and i loved it. I got dragged into the story from the beginning and didn't want to stop listening. Rachel is a trainee to become a k-pop star but what she has to face to get to where she is now and where she wants to go really made me feel all kinds of different emotions in a short time. Definetly loved this book

3.5⭐ I loved the look into the intense, competitive world of kpop trainees. I was more interested in Rachel's life as a trainee than I was in the romance, and my interest waned at times when the story felt slow, but this was a fun read and I am already looking forward to book two. #arc #ya

Rachel Kim is a young Korean American training to be a K-Pop star. A very impressive debut, fiction but partially based on the life of real K-Pop star & author of this book. I wasn't sure I would like Shine as I'm not big on contemporary or romance, but I found it extremely readable. I was intrigued by the K-Pop world. I also liked all of the Korean culture & when Rachel travels to the island of Jeju, home of the famous haenyo.

HOTPock3tt @Melismatic I could tell from that blurb/description!! 😆lol it seems like she wrote her life story and changed the name of the company and the characters! 🤣lol! I‘ve always wondered why she left the group right at the height of their success! (edited) 5y
