Wine Girl
Wine Girl: The Obstacles, Humiliations, and Triumphs of America's Youngest Sommelier | Victoria James
10 posts | 10 read | 6 to read
An affecting memoir from the countrys youngest sommelier, tracing her path through the glamorous but famously toxic restaurant world At just twenty-one, the age when most people are starting to drink (well, legally at least), Victoria James became the countrys youngest sommelier at a Michelin-starred restaurant. Even as Victoria was selling bottles worth hundreds and thousands of dollars during the day, passing sommelier certification exams with flying colors, and receiving distinction from all kinds of press, there were still groping patrons, bosses who abused their role and status, and a trip the hospital emergency room. It would take hitting bottom at a new restaurant and restorative trips to the vineyards where she could feel closest to the wine she loved for Victoria to re-emerge, clear-eyed and passionate, and a proud wine girl of her own Michelin-starred restaurant. Exhilarating and inspiring, Wine Girl is the memoir of a young woman breaking free from an abusive and traumatic childhood on her own terms; an ethnography of the glittering, high-octane, but notoriously corrosive restaurant industry; and above all, a love letter to the restorative and life-changing effects of good wine and good hospitality.

Book #12 for #14Books14Weeks2021 . Yes, I am behind and I did not finish in time but I am going to finish lol. This book has been lingering on my stack since purchasing on a recommendation last spring. With a cover rivaling that of one of my favorites, Cork Dork by by Bianca Bosker, I knew I had to read this book! Wine girl reads like a memoir just like Cork Dork does. Fascinating and riveting. While I (cont in comments)

TheHeartlandBookFairy enjoyed the story of Victoria's background to some extent, what I really enjoyed reading the most was was her journey to becoming a Sommelier and all of the interesting wine facts and tidbits along the way. 3y
Ruthiella I like the cork sculpture! 🍷 3y

Victoria James has not had an easy road to get to where she is now. Her achievements are incredible to begin with, even before you realize the obstacles she overcame to get where she is. What an impressive woman and what an impressive memoir for someone so young.

Book 8 for #15books15weeks

TheHeartlandBookFairy Ooohhh, I am so adding this to my TBR list! 😁 4y
janeycanuck @TheHeartlandBookFairy Make sure you‘ve got wine in the house! You‘ll want a glass in hand when you pick it up. 4y
TheHeartlandBookFairy @janeycanuck That shouldn't be a problem 😂 I work part-time at a winery and just got home after almost 9 hours there🍷Cheers 😉 4y

janeycanuck @TheHeartlandBookFairy oh, that‘s so cool! 4y
TheHeartlandBookFairy @janeycanuck so, I started looking for the book and checked Amazon and Barnes & Noble. They both have them but the cover is different. It's the one that shows up If I click on the tagged book here. May I ask where you got your book? I like your cover so much better 😅 Also, have you read Cork dork bye Bianca Bosker? Also a true story and I loved it! The cover is super similar to the cover a photo of your book 😁 4y
janeycanuck @TheHeartlandBookFairy It‘s from Indigo (Canada) - I agree, it‘s a better cover! Cork Dork is on my list to get to one day but I haven‘t read it yet. James thanks Bosker in the acknowledgments as one of her early supporters 😊 4y
TheHeartlandBookFairy @janeycanuck Thanks for the information! You will love Cork Dork, how cool that sheep mentions her in her book 😁 4y
janeycanuck @TheHeartlandBookFairy the ISBN on my copy is 978-0-06-302273-7 and is listed as the international version. Try Book Depository, they probably carry the same edition. 4y
TheHeartlandBookFairy @janeycanuck Thank you, I found it and ordered it from here! A couple of months ago I found a copy of Cork Dork in a little free library where I was donating books. I had been looking for a copy for about a year for my brother so that one went to him. If I find another copy, I'll snag it and let you know. I'd be happy to send it to you 😁 4y

Victoria James certainly endured a great deal and achieved a great deal at a young age. Usually that would be the recipe for an audio memoir that I would tear through but I think this one lacked depth and self reflection making it difficult for me to connect. Plus I wanted more wine. #booked2020 #wineorwhine

Cinfhen Interesting pick....Sorry it wasn‘t a total hit 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Maybe she should have waited until she has more perspective ... 🤷🏼‍♀️ Good job on the prompt though! 🍷 4y

This memoir is less about wine and more about how good people are awesome and bad people suck.

Hovering between so-so and pick for this one but am feeling generous. I love reading anything about wine and the restaurant industry, although this was a little uneven. I wish I could be shocked at how poorly women are treated but nothing about it is surprising, sadly. Finally I can‘t help but mention that a professional narrator might have done a better job on the audio.

I‘ve realized that I‘m being drawn more and more to biographies! I love hearing people‘s stories and the obstacles they‘ve overcome and their personal triumphs! This book really shows why the me too movement needed to happen! Women need to be treated way better!!
