The Future We Choose
The Future We Choose: Surviving the Climate Crisis | Christiana Figueres, Tom Rivett-Carnac
Climate change: it is arguably the most urgent and consequential issue humankind has ever faced. How we address it in the next thirty years will determine the kind of world we will live in and will bequeath to our children and to theirs. In The Future We Choose, Christiana Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac--who led negotiations for the United Nations during the historic Paris Agreement of 2015--have written a cautionary but optimistic book about the world's changing climate and the fate of humanity. The authors outline two possible scenarios for our planet. In one, they describe what life on Earth will be like by 2050 if we fail to meet the Paris climate targets. In the other, they lay out what it will be like to live in a carbon neutral, regenerative world. They argue for confronting the climate crisis head-on, with determination and optimism. The Future We Choose presents our options and tells us what governments, corporations, and each of us can and must do to fend off disaster.

Mehso-so

I‘m between a pick and a so-so here. I think there was some rousing pieces here but overall I think I need another book to help me figure out what to really do (despite the detailed lists at the end).

RamsFan1963 I found the authors to be unrealistically optimistic about the future chances of avoiding a climate disaster. 4y
Smrloomis @RamsFan1963 I hope they are right but I think I want to read something more focused and supported than this. I was a bit disappointed to be honest. 4y
RamsFan1963 @Smrloomis If you want to dig deeper into the subject I highly recommend the brilliant Under The White Sky by Elizabeth Kolbert, also How to Avoid a Climate Disaster by Bill Gates and The Uninhabitable Earth by David Wallace-Wells. All of them should be required reading for those interested in the coming global climate change. 4y
Smrloomis @RamsFan1963 Thank you! I will check some of those out soon. I appreciate it! 4y

Pickpick

Book 3 for #NFN2020 and this one was fantastic! The authors take a stubborn optimistic approach, which is frankly what I needed this week. They lay out in easy terms what we need to do@at this late hour to tackle the climate change crisis, how to go about doing it, and what our 🌍 could look like if we succeed.

I highly recommend it! #NonfictionNovember

An aside: YAY PA! I may no longer live there, but I will always be Pennsylvanian. 💙

I‘m not a big shopper, but this statistic...wow. 🤯

zezeki I remember reading couple of months ago about the pollution that textile industry and cosmetics creates, and I was shocked. Plus, the clothes that gets thrown away every year, is absolutely horrible how much waste in clothes we produce. 4y
Soubhiville Isn‘t it awful? I‘ve always preferred shopping for second hand clothes for this reason. Thrifting is fun and I love the variety and finding something perfect! 4y
alisiakae @zezeki @Soubhiville clothing waste is atrocious. I knew the numbers were bad, I didn‘t realize it was that bad! I don‘t thrift as often as I used to, but for years, I‘ve made it a point to stick to clothing staples that are durable and high quality and will last for years. I hardly ever buy new clothes anymore, and when I do, it‘s to replace something I‘ve worn down to nothing. 4y

LitStephanie Good reminder! 4y
PurpleTulipGirl I saw something a few months ago that said a lot of clothing in the US and Western Europe only gets worn 6 times before being discarded. I was horrified. I‘m wearing a sweatshirt I‘ve had for 11 years, and it doesn‘t look ratty or old at all. 4y
Clwojick This is crazy! I admit to having a lot of clothes, but 95% of it is from the thrift stores, and when I get rid of clothing I throw clothing swap parties and then all the left overs go back to the thrift stores. If the clothing has holes or something in it, I try to use the fabric for crafts before I throw it out. (edited) 4y
Clwojick @PurpleTulipGirl same! I have some sweaters that I‘ve had for 10 years, and they still get worn every winter 4y
LaraS Yeah, it‘s sickening how high the numbers are, and so surprising they don‘t get called out for it more often. Equally surprising/frightening/disgusting is this article about how it‘s easier for online retailers to throw out returned items rather than check to see if they are in re-sellable condition. Mehso-so

Maybe it's me, maybe I've become cynical, maybe I've read too many books on the climate crisis, but I found this book teetering between so-so and pan. I found the authors hopelessly naive in their thoughts for changing basic human behavior, in less than ten years no less, and very simplistic in their belief we only have two choices: a carbon free Utopia or a burning hellscape⬇️⬇️⬇️

RamsFan1963 I give the book a so-so, despite the headache I got from rolling my eyes so often 🙄🙄, because of the earnestness and cockeyed optimism of the authors. 3 💥💥💥 5y
