I‘ve been reading this a chapter a week with my book club, and it has been very enjoyable. Magnetic North is a travel log from a woman in the Arctic, and this edition had an afterword ten years later after climate change had really started to take hold. #NonFictionNovember

I liked that this book looked at climate change from more of a non-western point of view that I usually see. I also appreciated the comparison between Pope Francis‘ Laudato si‘ and the Paris Climate Accord. #Naturalitsy @AllDebooks #NonfictionNovember

It took me all month to read this just because I knew the ending, and it‘s so easy to judge in hindsight. I‘m glad I persevered though because the afterword was excellent. #NonfictionNovember

triplem80 I wasn't sure if I would be able to finish, just because it was so depressing knowing how it would end. But I did push through, and it's definitely a worthwhile read! 54m

Hawaii's Humpback Whales | Paul H. Forestell, Gregory Dean Kaufman

This book has a lot of succinct humpback whale information, + black and white and color photographs. It suited my purpose to prepare me for a whale watching tour perfectly. It was published in the 1990s so I don‘t know that I would necessarily recommend it as I‘m sure there are other books with more updated research.
I took this where we saw a mother and calf near Lahaina, intending to take it with whales, but living in the moment won!

This library audiobook hold came in right in time for my day off plus #NonfictionNovember Highly recommend! Read well by the author. I learned so much, including:

* Tuberculosis aka Consumption sparked fashion trends
* It kills over a million people a year still today
* About 25% of the world‘s population has been infected by it
* It‘s almost completely treatable and even curable

ChaoticMissAdventures I was a full grown adult before I realized consumption was TB, weirdly I thought it had to do with drinking too much, I still pause to remember the "new" name. I thought this was a short but good read. 3d
Karisa @ChaoticMissAdventures Me too! Consumption always seemed like some tragic relic of the past. It‘s so sad to know it could be if there wasn‘t such greed connected to the cure 3d

Life Between the Tides | Adam Nicolson

So this is unexpected. I bought this a couple of years ago, and am only now getting to it, in a last-ditch attempt to read something for #nonfictionnovember.

I spent a delightful morning learning about sandhoppers. They groom themselves, to ensure their waxy exterior stays in good condition.

And this afternoon, I‘ve been treated to a discussion on whether prawns experience anxiety. Which, if I‘m honest, isn‘t something I expected to care about.

rockpools It‘s quite fascinating and very charming. 6d

quietlycuriouskate It's surprisingly gripping, isn't it? 😊 6d
rockpools @quietlycuriouskate The intro, I was thinking: this is NOT what I signed up for. But now I‘ve settled in, I‘m: do I have time for another chapter? It‘s quite unique! 6d

Today I learned these yew trees may have inspired Tolkien‘s door into Moria. It‘s a perfect Tree A Day and Tolkien crossover.

It‘s non fiction November so I‘m posting my current read. This is the true story that inspired Colson Whitehead‘s book the Nickel Boys. I‘ve just started this and it is already gut wrenching and heartbreaking.

Far From the Tree | Solomon, Andrew

I. Did. It. #finishwhatyoustarted #nonfictionnovember #allergictochunksters 11 years ago my brother in law gifted this to me, it was an absolute favourite of his and it makes sense to me how it resonated with him. As a woman, I feel the lack of female representation in this gigantic tome of a book appalling. It starts with son and ends with father which is a beautiful full circle for him as a gay man but leaves out 50% of the population

Karisa 🏆 The older I get, the harder it is for me to read books without realistically written women. Honestly, 90%+ of what I read is written by women these days. I‘m reading Stoner right now. I know it‘s a good book, but without a relatable adult woman character in sight so far 🤷🏻‍♀️ feels hollow 2w
mcctrish @Karisa Andrew did women and girls a disservice not including at least one chapter detailing all the slings and arrows a patriarchal society/world throws at us and more importantly how pervasive they are that it‘s the norm 2w
Suet624 It‘s like watching old movies and being shocked by what we accepted in the past. 2w

ChaoticMissAdventures I fully agree. I went back and forth between pick (for all of his research, and honestly my relief that the Trans chapter was not phobic) and so-so. As the “birthing“ sex I found his lack of discussion around pregnancy and birth - centering actual women not just the mistakes or the results really unsettling. I also was really frustrated at his lack of discussion around race. Especially in the crime chapter. 2w
mcctrish @ChaoticMissAdventures yes! Also poverty in relation to race and women and how that affects everything 🤯 2w
