Red Sky Over Hawaii
Red Sky Over Hawaii | Sara Ackerman
Inspired by real places and events of WWII, Red Sky Over Hawaii immerses the reader in a time of American history full of suspicion and peril in this lush and poignant novel about the indisputable power of doing the right thing against the odds. The attack on Pearl Harbor changes everything for Lana Hitchcock. Arriving home on the Big Island too late to reconcile with her estranged father, she is left alone to untangle the clues of his legacy, which lead to a secret property tucked away in the remote rain forest of Kilauea volcano. When the government starts taking away neighbors as suspected sympathizers, Lana shelters two young German girls, a Japanese fisherman and his son. As tensions escalate, they are forced into hiding--only to discover the hideaway house is not what they expected. When a detainment camp is established nearby, Lana struggles to keep the secrets of those in her care. Trust could have dangerous consequences. As their lives weave together, Lana begins to understand the true meaning of family and how the bonds of love carry us through the worst times.

Mehso-so

Read this one for book discussion and while it tackled some issues during WW 2 Hawaii, I‘m not a huge fan. Found the elements of magic/(nature?)to be disjointed and it was all a little too weird for me. The author captured the worries and prejudices of the time pretty well, but characters seemed flat to me.

History, romance, forgiveness, magic. A touching historical fiction novel with lovable, distinctive characters and a beautiful setting that is very much a part of the story. I didn‘t want this one to end. Bonus: I enjoyed learning about red honey. I‘d never heard of it until now! 🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺 #litsylovereads #bookspin

This is such a good book. Japan has attacked Pearl Harbor and what happens to family and friends afterwards is sometimes heartbreaking and sometimes heartwarming. I really enjoyed the characters and was invested in what happened to them.

KristiAhlers I loved this one also! 2y

My biggest stack of books that have a #LocationInTitle are (no big surprise) Hawaii-based. Here are a dozen books titled with island, city, location & historical site names in the titles. I‘m sure I am forgetting some.🌺🥭🍍🥥🏄🏼‍♀️🏝🌋

A solid historical fiction. I enjoyed having it set in Hawaii during world war 2 and it brought to light the untold stories of the victims of war. A good book that I enjoyed very much!

The finished Baked Potato Soup from a Jamie Oliver recipe. I topped mine with sour cream, chives & crumbles of soft blue cheese. Really good even if the weather isn‘t quite fall-like here! Link to soup recipe in comments.

One of my current reads. The third book by this author who writes historical fiction based in Hawaii centered around WW2. My library e-book finally came in so I am trying to at least start it.

#FebruaryFeels #WarIsHell

I read A LOT of WWII fiction & non-fiction & I especially like books set here in the islands I call home. These dozen books from my stacks are all set or partially set in Hawaii during WWII & tell the tales, both real & fictionalized, of the hell of war—before, during & it‘s aftermath. The tagged book is an upcoming novel from a Big Island author I enjoy—it‘s her third & I am looking forward to the release in May.

Crazeedi The tagged book sounds really good 5y
