Unfinished Business: Notes of a Chronic Re-Reader
Unfinished Business: Notes of a Chronic Re-Reader | Vivian Gornick
2 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
A celebration of passionate reading from the acclaimed author and critic In nine stunning essays, the inimitable Vivian Gornick returns to the books that have shaped her. From a reporter in 1970s New York, to a feminist negotiating love and independence, to a writer in the jubilant sanctity of older age- Gornick's life is compelling, and in the characters of literature she finds versions of herself through the years, each time she opens the page. Gornick finds solace in the contradictory figures of D.H. Lawrence's Sons and Lovers, assesses womanhood in Colette, and reflects on Marguerite Duras's The Lover; she revisits Great War novels by J.L. Carr and Pat Barker, uncovers the psychological complexity in Elizabeth Bowen, and soaks in Natalia Ginzberg, 'whose work ... made me love life more'. When two erratic, highly strung cats enter her life, she discovers Doris Lessing's Particularly Cats. Infused with Gornick's trademark verve and insight, this collection is a masterful appreciation of literature and its ability to illuminate.

This slim little book of essays about re- reading is a good pick for any reader. I have transformed over the years from someone who wouldn‘t even think to re-read, to someone who does it regularly and gets great pleasure from it. 📖

#coffeereading I am a huge fan of Gornick and here is an example of why.Her new book about the effects of re-reading novels at different stages of life suddenly breaks free with bold assessments of her real life. The novel referenced here is DH Lawrence‘s Sons & Lovers.I also think more people should check him out beyond the obvious Lady Chatterley,in my opinion, one of his lesser books.I love Vivian Gornick!

batsy I want to read this! I loved her insights and writing in this one 5y
Leftcoastzen @batsy I love that one too.In fact, I almost wrote I‘m looking at you Batsy at the end of my post!😂 5y
Branwen I love D.H. Lawrence! Especially his poetry! 😍 5y

LeticiaToraci This book is still quite actual, since until nowadays women alone are still frowned upon on society. 5y
