A history of women in rap, from early pioneers like Cindy Campbell, Debbie D, Patty Duke, and the Jazzy 5 MCs, to artists like Salt N Pepa, Queen Latifah, Da Bratt, and Lil Kim, up to modern artists like Rapsody and Cardi B. There are things that could‘ve been done better, but for the most part this was a pretty good look at women in a genre that most people associate with men. Covers styles, impact, and legacies.

This one caught my eye from both the title and the beautiful cover art. I also really love anything related to music so a book detailing the history of women in hip-hop is right up my alley.

Can‘t wait to get my hands on this one!

Music journalist Iandoli traces the difficult road women in hip hop have traveled since the birth of the genre. Her interviews and careful reporting reveal how female artists have been marginalized through lack of compensation, pressure to adopt a hyper-sexualized image, or being pitted against other female rappers in feuds. Some artists still managed to find success; others weren't as lucky, but you can't help but be inspired by their stories.

Decent retrospective of women in hip-hop. It was a little uneven and repetitive, too focused on beefs and not enough on beats, but an excellent overview of the impact of women on the genre. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼1/2
