'An outstanding and compassionate debut' Patrice Lawrence An utter page turner from a storming new talent. Passionate, committed and shines a ray of light into the darkest places - the YA novel of 2020! Melvin Burgess 'One of the brightest up and coming stars of the YA world' Alex Wheatle When fifteen-year-old Nathan discovers that his older brother Al, has taken his own life, his whole world is torn apart. Al was special. Al was talented. Al had so many dreams ... so why did he do it? Convinced that his brother was in trouble, Nathan decides to retrace Als footsteps. As he does, he meets Megan, Al's former classmate, who is as determined as Nathan to keep Al's memory alive. Together they start seeking answers, but will either of them be able to handle the truth about Als death when they eventually discover what happened? An extraordinary novel about loss, understanding and the importance of speaking up when all you want to do is shut down, from an incredible new talent, perfect for fans of Angie Thomas, Gayle Foreman, Jennifer Niven and Nikesh Shukla. #BurnBright Warning - this novel contains themes that some readers may find upsetting, including suicide and intense bullying.

Today is World Mental Health Day (10 Oct).

This book made me cry, shake with rage, and a whole roller coaster of emotions. It isn‘t an easy read, as it tackles tough topics like suicide, and bullying. But, it‘s written so well, I highly recommend this book.

I read lots of amazing books last year but this book moved me like no other. Anyone got any similar recommendations?

This is a debut YA novel that was released in March this year, and has some hard-hitting themes.

Stacked this one after @squirrelbrain review and knew I needed a book for this prompt and then it was only #99ponkindle. Although a really sad subject, it was very genuine and handled really well. So much social media pressure on kids ☹️ it‘s awful.

squirrelbrain Oh I‘m glad you liked it (I won‘t say enjoyed - the wrong word?). How are you doing? 5y
TrishB @squirrelbrain 😘 thank you for asking Helen, I haven‘t cried this week so that‘s definitely a bonus! Trying to limit work day and not watch the news too much because it chokes me and is too worrying. How about you? 5y
squirrelbrain Yes, I‘ve stopped obsessively watching the news too, trying to limit it to twice a day.... I‘ve started delivering fruit and veg (as a volunteer) for my local greengrocer, who are absolutely run off their feet, as you can imagine. Only doing it a couple of hours a day but it adds a bit of structure... Look after yourself 😘 5y

I don‘t read a lot of YA but I received this as an #arc from #netgalley and as it fitted the #booked2020 prompt #YAnovelbyaPOC I thought I‘d give it a go. I‘m so glad I did!

Nathan‘s older brother Al has taken his own life and Nathan wants to find out why. It‘s clearly a hard hitting book due to the subject matter but it feels authentic (the author talks about her own experiences with bullying) and I love that it is UK based rather than US.

TrishB This sounds good 👍🏻 stacked. 5y
