Bright, Precious Days
Bright, Precious Days: A novel | Jay McInerney
10 posts | 5 read | 17 to read
Even decades after their arrival, Corrine and Russell Calloway still feel as if theyre living the dream that drew them to New York City in the first place: book parties or art openings one night and high-society events the next; jobs they care about (and in fact love); twin children whose birth was truly miraculous; a loft in TriBeCa and summers in the Hamptons. But all of this comes at a fiendish cost. Russell, an independent publisher, has superb cultural credentials yet minimal cash flow; as he navigates a business that requires, beyond astute literary judgment, constant financial improvisation, he encounters an audacious, potentially game-changingor ruinousopportunity. Meanwhile, instead of chasing personal gain in this incredibly wealthy city, Corrine devotes herself to helping feed its hungry poor, and she and her husband soon discover theyre being priced out of the newly fashionable neighborhood theyve called home for most of their adult lives, with their son and daughter caught in the balance. Then Corrines world is turned upside down when the man with whom shed had an ill-fated affair in the wake of 9/11 suddenly reappears. As the novel unfolds across a period of stupendous changeincluding Obamas historic election and the global economic collapse he inheritedthe Calloways will find themselves and their marriage tested more severely than they ever could have imagined. From the Hardcover edition.

#TBRtemptation post 2! Russell & Corrine Calloway seem to live the NYC dream: book parities and high-society charity events; jobs they love; twins; a TriBeCa loft and Hampton summers. It all comes at a steep cost. He, as a publisher, has cultural clout but minimal cash; she devotes her time to helping feed the poor. And they're being priced out of their neighborhood. And then a man Corrine had an affair with reappears. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Billypar McInerney sure is fond of the word 'bright', isn't he? 😋 7y

Mehso-so

I read the previous two books in this trilogy and excited for this final book but in the end disappointing. If you like Tom Wolfe's Bonfire of the Vanities, you will love the trilogy.

Pickpick

I absolutely loved this book--and I had not read the two proceeding novels. I found moving the story of the challenges experienced by a long-term couple (exacerbated by annoying teen kids), and I was entranced by the New York Publishing angle. I'm always a sucker for stories that take place around the publishing industry.

Came home last night to find the International Festival of Authors had dropped three new books into my Little Free Library as part of a promotion across the city, together with a nice little note in the mailbox for me. What a lovely surprise!

britt_brooke So awesome! 8y
Zelma That is really cool! 👍 8y
Bette Some called our library to find out who was the librarian in the little free library here. We all had images of a teeny tiny little librarian inside. 😂😀😉 8y
lisakoby Awww, that warms my heart. 😊 8y

Today's bookish haul. I went in expecting to pick up a couple of titles, but got these instead. I've enjoyed Faderman's Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers, and I'm hoping her book has the same scope as Randy Shilts' Conduct Unbecoming. The Country of Ice Cream Star is different; I read the first chapter at the store and while the dialect is tricky I could not put it down. The others were also impulse buys. My name is Kris and I have a book problem.

BookishFeminist Love the cover on the Meg Wolitzer! 8y

Mel The Country of Ice Cream Star was one of my favorites last year! 8y
anwade88 The Country of Ice Cream Star is one of the most unique books I've read. The dialect is tricky but I did (slowly) pick it up. 8y
