Sisiter Caravaggio A Novel
Sisiter Caravaggio A Novel | Maeve Binchy, ils N Dhuibhne, Peter Cunningham
28 posts | 6 read | 1 to read
The small Caravaggio which hangs in the chapel of Doon Abbey attracts visitors from far and wide, until one night it disappears. The Sister Superior is unwilling to cooperate as this would compromise her silent-order ethos. Alice Dunwoody, a novitiate at the abbey, persuades Sister Mercy Superior to allow her to investigate, with the help of the abbey's librarian, Sister Mary Magdalene. As the nuns try to track down the painting, the list of possible suspects - and the body count - multiplies. Seven authors, including Maeve Binchy, each write a different chapter.

Question 4 of 4

EadieB I guess the writers wanted a happy ending! 5y
TheBookHippie It makes total sense as to how the story went ..seriously though a much needed fun ride for my brain. Can you imagine sitting around oooo let‘s do that to the story and at this rate we all can write a book together! 5y
cobwebmoth By the end I don't think a lot would have been accomplished by charges being brought against anyone. 5y
See All 6 Comments
Crewgurl Well one of the masterminds was dead, another turned government witness and the rest were nuns and Davy. I guess not much left to arrest...no one wants a bad press story about arresting nuns. 5y
JacqMac Typical Catholic Church getting away with murder. 😂Though really, there wasn‘t anyone to arrest in the end. 5y

Question 3 of 4

EadieB Not really! My main suspect was Sister Mercy Superior. 5y
TheBookHippie Nope! 🤣🤷🏽‍♀️🤪 5y
cobwebmoth I didn't get good feelings about Father Rynne, but I didn't think he would turn out to be that bad! 5y
See All 7 Comments
CoffeeNBooks I didn't suspect them at all- I thought it was Sister Mercy Superior the entire time. 5y
Crewgurl Nope. Came completely out of left field. Never really got a good explanation on the back story either. 5y
JacqMac I didn‘t suspect them either. Though when I was first reading about the “big” woman, I thought it might be a man. I think I even said that in one of our first discussions. 5y
rubyslippersreads Weren‘t there several “big women” in this story? Didn‘t Alice remember her mother calling her that? I didn‘t suspect either of the Jesuits, but like @JacqMac I thought at least one “big woman “ might be a man. 5y

This was interesting. It was an interesting story and an interesting way to write a story. But with each author writing a different chapter, the writing did feel a bit disjointed. There were also a lot of characters, which made it a little hard to follow sometimes. But it was a mystery and it did have some good surprises.

@Andrew65

Andrew65 I totally agree, Lost it‘s flow and consistency. Not finished yet by strongly likely to be soso. Started well (Maeve Binchy?) but didn‘t maintain this. 5y
rubyslippersreads @Andrew65 From the afterword, it sounded as though the project rested on Maeve Binchy being involved, since apparently she was the biggest name involved. I wish she‘d written the whole book. 😄 5y
JacqMac @rubyslippersreads @Andrew65 I agree. I‘m sure they had a fun time writing it. But it didn‘t really work. 5y

This was an interesting murder mystery, but not my favorite. There were several characters, and it got a bit confusing at times, but overall it was pretty good. The ending was definitely unexpected. #MaeveBinchyBuddyRead @Andrew65

JacqMac I can‘t figure that one out. And why is the M there? It doesn‘t really fit with the other murders. 5y

EadieB He's the art dealer so I presume that whoever stole the Caravaggio contacted him in order to sell it. 5y

EadieB I don't know what to think about Meadowfield's murder and I have no idea who the big lady is. 5y
Andrew65 The jury is most definitely out on these. 5y
CoffeeNBooks I think it's Sister Mercy Superior. She's described as being "...a bulky woman, standing well over six feet tall, with powerful hands..." So, she's tall like the woman on the hotel camera, and sounds like she could have the ability to break Meadowfield's neck. 5y

EadieB You never know what is in someone's heart but she certainly seems like a strange candidate to become a nun. 5y
CoffeeNBooks At first, I thought Alice was just there for her own safety or something. Something just doesn't seem quite right about it- she doesn't seem to be a likely candidate. 5y

Having given it a bit of thought, and considering your comments, these are the next books we‘ll read for the #MaeveBinchyBuddyRead

January : Sister Caravaggio (available on Kindle Unlimited)
February : A Few of the Girls
March : Chestnut Street
April : Maeve‘s Times

At the same time we will choose a new author to target. Do feel free to post below with suggestions in a similar style to Maeve.

Each Read will start on the 19th of each month.

Andrew65 One suggestion Cathy Kelly, books set in Ireland. https://www.fantasticfiction.com/k/cathy-kelly/ One example : 5y
Andrew65 Another suggestion Rosamunde Pilcher. Not Irish but possibly similarity style. https://www.fantasticfiction.com/p/rosamunde-pilcher/ One if her most famous books is (edited) 5y

Question for those of us doing the #MaeveBinchyBuddyRead.

Three options moving forward :

1. As finished all her novels decide on a new author for us to read monthly in her style.

2. Read in January the tagged novel she wrote with six others. Murder mystery where think all wrote chapters but not saying who wrote what chapter. In U.K. can get it free on Kindle Unlimited.

3. Read some of her short story books.

What do you want to do?

EadieB @Andrew65 I have a copy of Sister Caravaggio and some of her short stories. Wouldn‘t mind reading them but can read them on my own. I‘m willing to do whatever the majority of participants wants to do. Starting another author is a good option too. (edited) 5y
