'I loved it...terrifying' Lisa HallFlowers in the Attic meets The Girls: a gripping combination of fear, sexual tension and lethal fascination. The deadliest trap is the one you don't see...Sofia has just finished university and ended a troubled relationship when she attends a lecture about a New Age movement, Via Terra. Its leader is Franz Oswald, young, good-looking, urbane and mesmerizing. When Sofia meets Franz Oswald, the handsome, charming leader of a mysterious New Age movement, she's dazzled and intrigued. Visiting his headquarters on Fog Island, Sofia's struck by the beautiful mansion overlooking the sea, the gardens, the sense of peace and the purposefulness of the people who live there. And she can't ignore the attraction she feels for Franz. So she agrees to stay, just for a while. But as summer gives way to winter, and the dense fog from which the island draws its name sets in, it becomes clear that Franz rules the island with an iron fist. No phones or computers are allowed. Contact with the mainland is severed. Electric fences surround the grounds. And Sofia begins to realize how very alone she is and that no one ever leaves Fog Island...Praise for Fog Island: 'I loved it - tense and atmospheric, slowly drawing the reader in to a reality that is utterly terrifying.' Mehso-so

The author was a Scientologist for 25 years and so clearly understands the psychology of cults etc, but this book is about 250 pages too long (it clocks in a 544 pages) and a lot of nothing happens until the last 50 pages when too much happens. Also, a translation so the dialogue is a bit stiff. Apparently the first of a trilogy, but I will not be carrying on.

Crazeedi Sometimes authors don't know when to stop, or they leave you hanging. I hope you're having a lovely fall, I owe you a long letter, lots happened. 🥰 3y

Pickpick

If you‘ve ever wondered how rational, intelligent people are swept into cults and abusive relationships, Fog Island has the answer. Following Sophia‘s journey with ViaTerra is frightening because it speaks to the real world people who become trapped and manipulated.

**Trigger warning: this book does broach topics and displays of sexual abuse and harassment along with emotional and verbal abuse **

Going to a crime novel festival in a few weeks. There will be a lot of interesting authors present, so I better start reading their novels. This author used to be a Scientologist, but managed to ‘escape‘. I had to buy this chocolate when I saw it, and it‘ll go well with the book! I love to read books in the original language if possible, and now I‘ve got the chance.

MySharonaK The festival sounds interesting! Where is it? Also, let us know how the choc was 😍 5y
Tove_Reads @MySharonaK It‘s in Helsinki, Finland. Will be very Nordic noir. Many great authors and discussions! The choc is really, really good, plus Rainforest Alliance certified 💜 5y
MySharonaK @Tove_Reads oh lovely, does it happen every year? I‘m in the UK, but always looking for excuses to visit! Yay that the choc is so good, and rainforest alliance makes it even better 💙 5y
Tove_Reads @MySharonaK Yes, this is the fifth year. About half of the programme is in English. Then we have the annual big book fair at the end of October. Lots of programme. Always big names. 5y
MySharonaK @Tove_Reads sounds fab, thanks for taking the time and explaining to me 5y

Anneli
Sekten p Dimn | Mariette Lindstein
Pickpick
