Vanishing Half
Vanishing Half | Brit Bennett
From The New York Times-bestselling author of The Mothers, a stunning new novel about twin sisters, inseparable as children, who ultimately choose to live in two very different worlds, one black and one white. The Vignes twin sisters will always be identical. But after growing up together in a small, southern black community and running away at age sixteen, it's not just the shape of their daily lives that is different as adults, it's everything: their families, their communities, their racial identities. Ten years later, one sister lives with her black daughter in the same southern town she once tried to escape. The other secretly passes for white, and her white husband knows nothing of her past. Still, even separated by so many miles and just as many lies, the fates of the twins remain intertwined. What will happen to the next generation, when their own daughters' storylines intersect? Weaving together multiple strands and generations of this family, from the Deep South to California, from the 1950s to the 1990s, Brit Bennett produces a story that is at once a riveting, emotional family story and a brilliant exploration of the American history of passing. Looking well beyond issues of race, The Vanishing Half considers the lasting influence of the past as it shapes a person's decisions, desires, and expectations, and explores some of the multiple reasons and realms in which people sometimes feel pulled to live as something other than their origins. As with her New York Times-bestselling debut The Mothers, Brit Bennett offers an engrossing page-turner about family and relationships that is immersive and provocative, compassionate and wise.

This book was an exploration into identity and duality. The theme for choosing be something different and the loss and fear that comes with that made me sad and at times anxious. However, it was beautifully written and each character was beautiful and frustrating in their own way. Jude and Reese‘s story of patient love and acceptance was my favorite. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ericalambbrown I absolutely loved this one! It totally sucked me in 3y

Loving this book. I‘ve had a hard time getting back into reading during the pandemic... and during year 1 of mommyhood. But finally getting back into it and just love this book.

Gotta love it when a book lives up to the hype! Wow! I could not put this book down. The plot spans across decades and the country but stays compelling. The characters are endearing, relatable, and frustrating all at once.

I was not ready for it to end and so glad to read that HBO is adapting it for the small screen.

I enjoyed this book way more than I thought! Usually when there are intertwining stories, it‘s easy to get mixed up, but the author did a great job of keeping characters and timelines separated. I would definitely recommend this book, and I think our book club will have an interesting discussion about it. Super relevant right now.

Sinking into some Saturday morning reading. The Vanishing Half is up for the National Book Award. I read Brit Bennett‘s debut The Mothers which was set in Oceanside, California. She‘s an author I will continue to follow. #thevanishinghalf #britbennett

I didn't love this book. I think Bennett writes beautifully, and I was interested in the characters and how their choices and backgrounds led them to lead different lives. But it felt very slow yet we didn't fully dive into a timeline and character before jumping to a new one. I just wanted more and was so shocked when it was over because I didn't think anything happened yet. I also felt like Reese deserved more of a storyline.
