If You Give a Pig a Pancake | Laura Numeroff

If you give a pig a pancake, she'll want some syrup to go with it. You'll give her some of your favourite maple syrup, and she'll probably get all sticky, so she'll want to take a bath. She'll ask you for some bubbles. When you give her the bubbles... Ages 05

A friend shared this with me and now we‘ve challenged each other to read as many books as possible that feature a pig.

So far, I have mostly picture books (see tagged) plus Charlotte‘s Web, Babe, Animal Farm, and Lord of the Flies (because I‘m funny like that).

Littens, can you think of any others??

Soubhiville This one‘s on my TBR. I love Sy Montgomery. 1y

This MF story is a different take on if you give a mouse a cookie. It is a silly book which talks about the causes of things that happen. This book is a great option for a read aloud. There are things such as if you give a pig a pancake, it will want syrup.  #UCFLAE3414SP21 https://www.brighthubeducation.com/elementary-school-activities/101986-if-you-gi...

Emiranda This source is great for creating a sequence necklace for students to learn about sequence activities. The UDL principle 1.3 applied here gives students a visual to map out and see the sequence of the story and break it down. EL 13 is used in this activity to review the story and the way events happened throughout the story. 4y

If You Give A Pig A Pancake, by Laura Numeroff, and illustrated by Felicia Bond, is a cute rhyming book about what might happen if a pig gets hungry around your home. You might have to give him a bath, some clothes, a suitcase, and much, much, more! So beware if a pig comes to your home asking for pancakes and syrup! #ucflae3414su20

CameoD UDL principle 3.2 aligns well with this book, because it highlights the consecutive pattern of the pig needing more things from you! And Esol strategy 17 would pair beautifully if you used this book as a reader‘s theatre opportunity and used props. These are some awesome sequencing tools to use along with the book! https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.pinterest.com/amp/pin/191332684142936032/ 4y
LauraLeighn I love your description of the book, it sums up this adorable book well. I also think your UDL principle lines up with this book well. 4y
DrSpalding Sequencing is an important part of comprehending stories. Would you use your sequencing tools after a read aloud or a storytelling? No teaching strategy? 4y

If You Give a Pig a Pancake
Author: Laura Numeroff
Illustrator: Felicia Bond
Genre: Modern Fantasy
Awards: Quill Award (2006)
“If you give a student the chance to predict, they will probably want some background knowledge” The classic book by Laura Numeroff is filled with the antics and mischief of a little girl and a perky pig. Loved by children all over the nation, IF You Give Pig A Pancake is a great Shared Reading(SR) book for the class.

LauraLeighn It has simple language and a cute, easy to understand the plot. When you apply UDL 3.1 (Activate or supply background knowledge) you can then encourage students to use background knowledge to predict what is going to happen next in the story. This promotes critical thinking and heightens prediction and assessment skills. ESOL 42.( Have students use timelines to arrange and sequence important facts and information)helps to ensure total 4y
LauraLeighn comprehension of the story and gives students a reason to reread and critically think of the sequence of events. The website Fantastic Fun and Learning has an article by Shaunna Evan that lists resources, activities, and lesson plans to go with Laura Numeroff books, https://www.fantasticfunandlearning.com/activities-to-go-with-books-by-laura-num.... This would be a great resource if you decided to do an AS. #ucflae3414SU20 4y
Nkaufmann Laura, you did a good job of explaining why the UDL and ESOL principles you chose, would be helpful in the classroom. You made a great point in saying that it is important to promote critical thinking. That‘s something I haven‘t thought about. I also remember reading and loving this book in elementary school. 4y
AshleyH I love the book, If You Give A Mouse A Cookie, so I know I would love this one too. Young students love to hear these fun stories. You made a great EL strategy selection as making a graphic organizer aids comprehension. 4y
DrSpalding Your resource has a lot to offer but remember to search the author and publisher first! These circle stories are excellent for sequencing activities. An author study in the primary grades would be an excellent option as well. 4y

“If You Give a Pig a Pancake” was written by Laura Numeroff in 1998. This book is my absolute favorite because of the adorable illustrations and the minimal words used to describe the scene. The pictures say a thousand words. I can‘t wait to read this book to my classroom!

I was plagued trying to remember a specific book from my childhood so after fruitless online searching I pulled out a box of my childhood books and found these little literary trips down memory lane. (More pics to follow!)

What are your favorite childhood books? What is your go to baby shower book gift?

Soubhiville My faves were Where the Wild Things Are, The Best Nest, Blueberries for Sal, Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, and the Little Monster books. Just to name a few 😉. 6y

If you give a pig a pancake by Laura Numeroff illustrates by Felicia Bond is a hilarious story about a pig that is all over the place changing what she wants every minute but coming back to the same ending as when she started. I would use this as storytelling, like I did in class. The students could create a circle and fill in the blanks for each thing the pig does. This book is fantasy because obviously pigs don‘t eat pancakes and hang wallpaper.

Kaelya The UDL I would use for this book is 7.2 because students may be able to relate to themselves as all over the place like the pig or may be able to relate to the little girl if theyre sibling does things like the pig does! I would use number 8 for ESOL because of the images you can create to describe what is happening in the story. #ucflae3414sub18 lauranumeroff.com 6y

This is a sweet F book was a New York Times Best Seller that I would use as a RA to introduce sequence of events in a text for younger classrooms (K-1). I would expand this lesson to have students write their own If you give a ____ a ____ stories. This story follows the day of a girl and her pig friend. The girl spends her day trying to accommodate a pig who finds she needs one thing after the other. #UCFLAE3414SP18

AndreaG UDL 2.2 is provided in the text by the familiar structure followed in each phase of the book. ELL strategies 6, 8, 32. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/if-you-give-pi... (edited) 7y
WendyV I LOVE this book, and using it to teach a lesson on sequence of events is a great idea! I can‘t believe I don‘t own this book, but after being reminded how cute it is, I need to make sure to add it to my growing collection! 7y
Laura.S @AndreaG I love this book and the entire collection! I think they are so cute and funny and truly engages students when it is read. I want to make sure my classroom library as all the books of this collection! I think the activity you found is so creative and really allows students to become authors. 7y

morganhillman This was one of my favorite books growing up! I loved your idea on allowing the kids to come up with their own phrase similar to the book. It‘s a great idea and allows them to be very creative and have fun with it. Great book and lesson plan you added! 7y
ambera I loved these books as a child. I can't wait to introduce these books to my younger students. 7y
erin.yarbrough This one is from my childhood too! 7y
BriannaR Favorite book growing up. Love your choice. 7y
DrSpalding I love the idea of a text innovation; students making their own class book following the style of this author, is a wise choice. 7y
DrSpalding Each of her books make for excellent choices for storytelling as well! What strategy were you thinking? 7y
SadiqaH I like this book because it is great for story telling . 7y
AndreaG @drslalding I was thinking RA, then scaffold to show students what a “If you give me a ____” story would sound like. I‘d have them practice aloud in small groups and them let them branch off independently to write their story. I think this would make text-to-self connections. (edited) 7y

If You Give a Pig a Pancake, written by Laura Numeroff and illustrated by Felicia Bond, is a F picture book that is a circular story of what happens when you give a pig a pancake. This book is perfect for an AS of Laura Numeroff, because you can teach the students how she tends to write many books that contain a circular story, thus beginning a lesson on what circular story means. A UDL strategy is 6.2 (support planning and strategy development).

KatherineBeckham This strategy works because you are building the students knowledge of writing strategies by teaching them about circular stories. An ESOL strategy is 42 (have students use timelines to arrange and sequence important facts and information). This link actually takes you to an activity that will help accomplish strategy 42: 7y
MadisonCarter LOL love this image, Katherine! I want all of the books from this series 🐷🥞 7y
elifkelly I love that this book is a part of a series, so students have something to look forward to after they‘ve read her previous books. Great picture! 7y
