Two Solitudes
Two Solitudes | Hugh MacLennan
10 posts | 7 read | 7 to read
First time in the New Canadian Library Northwest of Montreal, through a valley always in sight of the low mountains of the Laurentian Shield, the Ottawa River flows out of Protestant Ontario into Catholic Quebec. It comes down broad and ale-coloured and joins the Saint Lawrence, the two streams embrace the pan of Montreal Island, the Ottawa merges and loses itself, and the main-stream moves northeastward a thousand miles to sea. With these words Hugh MacLennan begins his powerful saga of Athanase Tallard, the son of an aristo-cratic French-Canadian tradition, of Kathleen, his beautiful Irish wife, and of their son Paul, who struggles to establish a balance in himself and in the country he calls home. First published in 1945, and set mostly in the time of the First World War, Two Solitudes is a classic novel of individuals working out the latest stage in their embroiled history.

Part of the Canadian canon and once having read it, I‘m not surprised. Learned so much as well. Great read.

I've been struggling hard lately with my reading!!! I just haven't found that book to knock me off my seat!

Usually a good chunky one helps so thought about these 4:

Went to the library to return Helen Dunmore's book and walked out with 3 more. Aren't libraries great?

The Collector looks like some creepy fun and I love the cover. The cover for the classic CanLit Two Solitudes forced my hand and I'm always into a new Alison Moore. Death and the Seaside gives me The Lighthouse vibes - a book I really loved.

All brand new - another thing that brings me joy! The first one to crack open a library book.

A Pick with reservations. As a classic of Canlit it was interesting to read, but I wouldn't necessarily start with this one if you've never read MacLennan.

I'm reading The Novel of the Century, which talks about Les Misérables, and this part of the introduction made me think of Two Solitudes. Going by this description of Les Mis, I have to wonder whether MacLennan had this book in mind when he decided to name a particular character "Marius". ?

Changing locations for hour 15 of the #24in48. Reading in the backyard at the in-laws'. We'll see how long I last before bugs chase me inside 😜

This is one of THE big books of Canlit, and by one of my favourite authors, so of course I haven't read this yet 😜
#readjanuary

shawnmooney I have yet to read this one either, but I read another of his when I was still in high school and loved it: 8y
rabbitprincess @shawnmooney Yes! That is one of my favourite books of all time 😄 8y
mllemay Haven't either but then again, there's a lot of canlit I haven't read 😔 8y
rabbitprincess @mllemay Same! I am using the 150th as my excuse to finally get started on some of it! Two Solitudes is one of my choices. Also hoping to read some Margaret Laurence. 8y
mllemay @rabbitprincess good idea! I've read a few Margaret Laurence a while ago and I remember enjoying them. I've decided to pick a Canadian author and read their body of work this year, and I'm going with Lee Maracle. 8y
