The Irish Princess
The Irish Princess | ELIZABETH. CHADWICK
8 posts | 3 read | 13 to read
Ireland, 1160 Aoife MacMurchada is just 14 years old when her father Diarmit, King of Leinster, is brutally deposed, and her family is forced to flee Southern Ireland into English exile. Diarmit seeks help from King Henry II, an alliance that leads him to the charismatic Richard de Clare, lord of Striguil, a man dissatisfied with his lot and open to new horizons. Diarmit promises Richard wealth, lands, and Aoife's hand in marriage in return for his aid, but Aoife, has her own thoughts on the matter. She may be a prize, but she is not a pawn and she will play the game to her own advantage. From the royal halls of scheming kings, to staunch Welsh border fortresses and across storm-tossed seas to the wild green kingdoms of Ireland, The Irish Princess is a sumptuous, journey of ambition and desire, love and loss, heartbreak and survival.

So excited for these historical fiction prompts. March, May and June are books that are on my shelves and I‘ve been wanting to try a Gortner and found it on Libby. Win win.

Thanks @Cuilin

@dabbe

Cuilin I‘m so impressed. That was so quick. They all look good too. 10mo

Aiofe here is very different than she appears in The Scarlet Lion, Chadwick‘s book on William Marshall. There Aiofe is a bitter and mad mother-in-law. We leave her in The Irish Princess in Striguil, a young mother determined to live her live unmarried & protect her children‘s inheritance. There is a large gap between these portraits. That is interesting. But so was this book of her life from birth to young widowhood. It was well-written. 4/5

I have been craving some good historical fiction for a while now - it‘s because I‘m very fussy about time periods and authors.
Love Chadwick and love books set in Henry II period (with a little cameo from William Marshall). A great read stayed up past my bed time to finish!

Scochrane26 I want to read her books but never seem to get around to them. I‘ve read the first 2 about elinor of Aquitaine. 5y
TrishB @Scochrane26 I love her books. You have to read the third about Eleanor and finish the story 😁 , also highly recommend the two about William Marshall, The Greatest Knight and A Place Beyond Courage 👍🏻 5y
