Blood: A Memoir | Allison Moorer
10 posts | 5 read | 15 to read
The Grammy- and Academy Award- nominated singer-songwriter's haunting, lyrical memoir, sharing the story of an unthinkable act of violence and ultimate healing through art 1986, Mobile, Alabama. A fourteen-year-old girl is awakened by the unmistakable sound of gunfire. On the front lawn, her father has shot and killed her mother before turning the gun on himself. Allison Moorer would grow up to be an award-winning musician, with her songs likened to "a Southern accent: eight miles an hour, deliberate, and very dangerous to underestimate" (Rolling Stone). Now, Allison turns her lyrical storytelling powers to recount the events leading up to the moment that forever altered her own life and that of her older sister, Shelby, with whom she shares an unbreakable bond. Gorgeously written, Blood delves into the meaning of inheritance and destiny, shame and trauma -- and how it is possible to carve out a safe place in the world despite it all. With a foreword by Grammy winner Shelby Lynne, Blood is a familial Just Kids that reads like an intimate journal -- vivid, haunting, and ultimately life-affirming.

This was a really fascinating read. I was familiar with the music of Allison Moorer and her sister Shelby Lynne but had no idea that one day when they were young, their dad killed their mom and then himself. This book was really heartbreaking as she looks back on the memories, good and bad, and how this tragedy has affected both her and her sister. I‘m really glad I read it, she is a beautiful writer.

Wow wow wow. This is a must read for anyone working in the criminal justice, medical, or psychology field.

Allison's story is heart wrenching but it is told in such a poetic, lyrical, and captivating way. I was so drawn into this book it was difficult to put down.

I will use some quotes from this to train my new interns in my social work program at my job. Just extremely powerful. Trigger warnings for sure though, be aware.

A strong ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫

KathyWheeler Her new book, I Dream He Talks To Me, about life with her non-verbal, autistic son, just came out. I loved Blood and I‘ll probably read her new one as well. 3y
LoverOfLearning @KathyWheeler oh wow I bet that is another emotional rollercoaster of a book too. I'll have to check it out! 3y

Going to start this memoir. A story about trauma, family, and the impact of memories.

I've never heard of singer-songwriter / author Allison Moore before and best bet I'm gonna look her up. This story and the writing style forced me to buy it off the shelf.

Inside there looks to be drawings, notes, and possibly poetry.

I predict a 5 star read.

I already knew Allison Moorer was a beautiful writer as I‘ve been a fan of both her and her sister, Shelby Lynne, for awhile now. This memoir is mainly about her brutal childhood and the murder of her mother by her father, who also killed himself. It‘s sad and touching and made me hurt for her and for her entire family. #FeastMode

I‘m trying to read Blood, but Jayne isn‘t allowing it. He‘s more interested in getting me to pet him for the rest of the day.

Megabooks This book was good but sad. 4y
KathyWheeler @Megabooks I thought it might be sad, as I knew the basic story about her parents. So far, it is really good. 4y
wanderinglynn What a cutie! Clearly in dire need of some snuggles. ❤️🐱 4y

KathyWheeler @wanderinglynn Clearly the need is extremely dire! 😄. He‘s a sweetie and smart too. I actually don‘t like him in this room because he loves to run to my chair and scratch on it. But I let him in anyway. 😊 4y

I am numb today. I enjoyed this #audiobook but more because I liked the narrator‘s soothing Alabama accent. Despite the violent content, TW for domestic, child and animal abuse, I just wanted to hear more of her voice. Idk this is a weird time for me right now.

Scochrane26 Hope your dad is improving and that you‘re feeling ok. 4y
LiteraryinPA I‘m sure that anything you read now is going to go by in a blur in some ways because of what you‘re going through. It‘s valid to feel how you‘re feeling in this period of uncertainty and worry for your dad. Keep going one day at a time and if there‘s anything you need, we are all here for you. 4y

Megabooks @Scochrane26 thanks. He has a long road to walk and mom and I are doing our best to be supportive. 💜💜 4y
Megabooks @LiteraryinLititz thank you so much. It‘s just a hard path for each of us to walk for different reasons. Obviously dad has it the hardest, but he‘s doing his best - we all are, and that‘s all we can do. 💕💕 4y
Megabooks @TheBookHippie thank you! 💙💙 4y
Cinfhen I bailed on this yesterday / I couldn‘t connect / I was very distracted 4y
Cinfhen What‘s new with your dad?? 4y
Reviewsbylola Wow how horrible. Stacking. 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen yeah, this is a different audiobook. We video chatted with dad yesterday. He just has this relentless, severe head pain because of the increased pressure. He wants to connect, but he‘s doing so much rehab (3-5 hours a day) and with the pain, he‘s just exhausted. I wish we could be with him but due to COVID, that‘s not allowed yet. Our community and family has been wonderful, so that‘s good. ⬇️⬇️ 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I‘m finding it more difficult to be the healthier one watching him than being the sick one. 😢 4y
Cinfhen Thank God for your strong supportive community. I know how close you & your dad are...I‘m sure his pain becomes your pain. I wish you both speedy health and healing. 💚 4y

I like Allison Moorer‘s music. She and her sister, Shelby Lynne, had a pretty traumatic childhood. Then, I also love Pat Conroy, so I‘m interested in reading Cassandra King‘s book about their lives together.
