The Twilight Children | Gilbert Hernandez
9 posts | 10 read | 12 to read
Comics legends Gilbert Hernandez (LOVE AND ROCKETS), Darwyn Cooke (DC: THE NEW FRONTIER) and Dave Stewart (HELLBOY) craft a haunting and unforgettable tale of magical realism with THE TWILIGHT CHILDREN. No one knows what the mysterious glowing spheres are, or where they come from. The only thing that matters to the residents of the beachside village where the orbs manifest is what they do when they appear. They blind children and imbue them with psychic abilities. They destroy homes, and make entire families disappear. They attract scientists, government experts and secret agents, each with their own agenda. And they inflame small-town passions-secret lovers, simmering resentments-to a fever pitch. Now, theyve brought Ela. Materializing on the beach just as mysteriously as one of the orbs, this beautiful woman says nothing, but seems to harbor unspeakable power. Will she help to save the town, or destroy it? Or is it Ela herself who is really in danger? Collects the four-issue VERTIGO miniseries.

Undeniably great artwork from Darwyn Cooke.

From there, ???

I‘ve not read much by Gilbert Hernàndez, sacrilege, I know. I have read that this work focuses on trash female characters that have a lot of sexual partners & hyper-macho male protagonists.

So, not really written for me. This entire storyline lacks sense & you will not find any character either relatable or likable.

My verdict: Meh. ??‍♂️??

Yuki_Onna Hmmm, having many different sexual partners and enjoying sex doesn't make you a trash female, does it? 🤔 I strongly disagree. 😎 2y
Soscha Touché! I meant more the women are greedy, grasp-y bullies. No one‘s especially likable in this tale. Whether that follows through in Hernández‘s other graphics but have heard so. 2y

I'm confused. I don't really understand what happened or why it happened. I don't care much for any of the characters. This just left me shrugging my shoulders and scratching my head in bewilderment. May you have better luck with this.

Tammygrrrl Thank you. I won't waste my time (and library holds!) on it. 8y

Interesting idea (orbs from the sky, inexplicable blindness, possible alien encounters), uneven execution (choppy dialogue and very little character development). I'm not sure if there is more to this series, but I'd be willing to continue.

I loved the artwork and pithy characters, but the story is a bit slow. Still a good quick read. White orbs start showing up in a beachside village. A scientist, town floozy, her mysterious husband and sleazy boyfriend, the sheriff, 3 blind kids and a beautiful mute woman work to solve the mystery.

A big, weird, beautiful mess. Cooke's work is gorgeous as always, but the opaque magical realism of the narrative always kept me at arms length. Flawed but fascinating.
