I‘m babysitting sweet Wesley and his brothers tonight, and I‘ve reread a big chunk of HEIR TO THE SHADOWS in between play sessions. It‘s clicked for me that the reason these books are so readable and compelling, despite the dodgy bits, is how well Anne Bishop nails that all-important balance between the mythic and the personal. These characters are PEOPLE first, no matter what dark magics or ancient social orders govern their lives.

Tigers, and wolves, and unicorns... oh my. This second book was exhilarating to read. The world building and characters are awesome.

Well. I‘m not quite sure what I think of this trilogy yet, even though this is the second book. It continues the story of the characters from the first book, but several years later. A bizarre amalgamation of magic, darkness, child sexual abuse and rape, fantastical creatures (unicorns, dragons, etc) and toxic masculinity. But there is something compelling about the story, and I will finish the trilogy.
