Gray Delacroix has dedicated his life to building his very successful global spice empire, but it has come at a cost. Resolved to salvage his family before it spirals out of control, he returns to his ancestral home to save his brother and sister before it's too late. As a junior botanist for the Smithsonian, Annabelle Larkin has been charged with the impossible task of gaining access to the notoriously private Delacroix plant collection. If she fails, she will be out of a job and the family farm in Kansas will go under. She has no idea that in gaining entrance to the Delacroix world, she will unwittingly step into a web of dangerous political intrigue far beyond her experience. Unable to deny her attraction to the reclusive business tycoon, Annabelle will be forced to choose between her heart and loyalty to her country. Can Gray and Annabelle find a way through the storm of scandal without destroying the family Gray is fighting to save?

I am loving this book so much. As a goody it‘s fun to learn a bit about the origin of spices in America. Such a fun historical Fiction book!

The owner of a world renowned spice company butts heads with a botanist from the Smithsonian over a rare orchid in this story set in 1900 Washington D.C. Accepting an invitation to tour the hero‘s greenhouses means unwittingly becoming involved in political intrigue which has the heroine questioning her loyalties.
I really enjoyed the historical setting. This is published by a Christian imprint but isn‘t overly preachy. #ebook #historical

A quiet evening reading and trying to stay warm. I‘ve discovered that I can still tap to turn the page with my hand under the blanket! 🙃☺️

rubyslippersreads Thanks for the tip! (I‘ve also learned a cat paw can turn the page, but not necessarily when I want it turned. 😹) (edited) 4y

“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
This quote from the Gospel of Mark is what came to mind as I sat down to write this review. Gray Delacroix is a man of means. In the aftermath of the Civil War, his father [...] started over and built an empire around the importation of various spices.

Truly this is a historical fiction not to be missed. There is a unique premise and plot filled with intrigue, espionage, twists and turns, as well as beautifully crafted characters and interesting historical information. Set in 1900 Alexandria, VA and Washington DC and Cuba, this book will take you on a journey of the heart where loyalties are tested in a world where spices rule and food industry is ungoverned.
