Told with gripping intensity, It Would be Night in Caracas chronicles one woman's desperate battle to survive amid the dangerous, sometimes deadly, turbulence of modern Venezuela and the lengths she must go to secure her future. In Caracas, Venezuela, Adelaida Falcon stands over an open grave. Alone, except for harried undertakers, she buries her mother-the only family Adelaida has ever known. Numb with grief, Adelaida returns to the apartment they shared. Outside the window that she tapes shut every night--to prevent the tear gas raining down on protesters in the streets from seeping in. When looters masquerading as revolutionaries take over her apartment, Adelaida resists and is beaten up. It is the beginning of a fight for survival in a country that has disintegrated into violence and anarchy, where citizens are increasingly pitted against each other. But as fate would have it, Adelaida is given a gruesome choice that could secure her escape. Filled with riveting twists and turns, and told in a powerful, urgent voice, It Would Be Night in Caracas is a chilling reminder of how quickly the world we know can crumble.

I dove into this book expecting depth and an intimate and searing look at Venezuela. Unfortunately, I found this hard to follow which took me out of the story as I attempted to figure out if we were in the present or past. But even with this, I still thought the prose were lyrical and the overall tone melancholic which definitely heightened the writing and my enjoyment.

This was my choice for #FoodAndLit #Venezuela

The MC Adelaide is trying to survive during a period of unrest, and following her mothers death. While it was interesting to read of her struggles, it was difficult to keep track of what was happening at times, and the background wasn‘t fully fleshed out. I also found it very hard to like the character.

Overall it was good enough to keep reading, but only just. In the end it wasn‘t my cup of tea ☕️🫖

Added a hundred books to my wish list but managed to only buy this one in the bookstore today! It sounds good, let‘s hope it is!😁 it‘s actually not a book I would usually go for but I tried to find something that‘s a bit out of my comfort zone

I wanted to have sympathy for the mc but knowing that her position is mostly missing a time when anyone not pale(white) and upper/middle class was treated like vermon makes it hard to feel much of anything.

Currently reading this with a grain of salt after looking up the background of Venezuelan politics (briefly).

The novel is by Karina Sainz Borgo and translated by Elizabeth Bryer. The author is a journalist from Venezuela who relocated to Madrid, and the main character of the novel follows a similar path. The novel is so focused on her life and struggles without a lot of context so I had to do a lot of reading about Venezuela - its government, the poverty, the violence - it's all there in the background but not something I knew a lot about. ↘️

ReadingEnvy And the way the main character encounters it is as a woman alone - at the beginning she has to bury her mother who died because there was no health care infrastructure, without family because they were either dead or unwilling to risk traveling. It isn't long before she decides she has to flee the country, and while a lot of convenient things have to happen for that to work, it is still harrowing.↘️ 3y
ReadingEnvy Interestingly, Venezuela has been in the news this week because they blamed the U.N. and United States for what is happening in Ukraine. That initiated another internet rabbit hole, to find Venezuela closely aligned with Russia and Cuba.↘️ 3y
ReadingEnvy The other thing I did was to spend some time in Google Maps, looking at some of the amazing rainforest landscapes found in the south of the country, and read recent stories about an American who has been held under espionage charges for several years. 3y

I was in between a pick and so so for this one! Reading about the turmoil and horrors in Venezuela was difficult to read but the struggle to survive was so evident in this novel.

If you, like me, know little and understandd even less, about the Venezuelan crisis, you will not come away with a greater understanding of the underpinnings of the crisis but you will certainly be attuned to the impact on Venezuelan society. Karina Sainz Borgo‘s spare writing style still manages to be incredibly vivid, and your heart will beat faster as the end comes nearer. Read the full review at http://therealnani.com

A very dark, disturbing but fascinating story of life in the current political situation in Venezuela. We follow Adelaida‘s daily life as her world changes very quickly, from a happy, stable life to finding essential medicines and food, with tear gas and revolutionaries on the streets.

I highly recommend this book. Also #covercrush.

I received a copy of this book from #netgalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I finished this galley last night, and needed some time to compose my thoughts.

A well-written story of loss and upheaval set in chaotic Venezuela. Overall, a good (and at times, disturbing) story, but I struggled to stay interested due to some flashbacks that didn't seem to advance the story.
