Rules of Summer
Rules of Summer | Shaun Tan
7 posts | 14 read | 6 to read
From the NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of THE ARRIVAL Never be late for a parade. Never forget the password. Never ruin a perfect plan. It's all about the rules. But what if the rules feel completely arbitrary? What if your older brother is the only one who gets to make them up all summer long? And what if he's the only one who can save you when the darkness of winter comes rushing in? As usual, master artist and storyteller Shaun Tan shows us the strange truth of ordinary things -- rules, relationships, despair, and hope -- as only he can.

I am getting obsessed with Shaun Tan's books. This was a great picture book. Basically its rules what not to do during the summer and it shows two boys getting in a lot of trouble. The artwork is just simply stunning and it is what keeps me coming back to read more from this author.

Mehso-so

My sister (31), her son (2) and my other nephew (newly 10) listened to me read this one to them in the car. None of them were into it and I must admit neither was I. I wanted to be as I had heard the author was good. I purchased it from a small town library sale on a shopping day yesterday for $1. A little too arty farty for us. Picture taken in my mother‘s rock garden.

julesG I like Shaun Tan, but not all of his books are equally good. Totally get your so-so. 5y
CarolynM I know a lot of people love Shaun Tan, but I've never been able to see the charm. 5y
LibrarianRyan I like Tan for the art. I find many of the stories boring. So I get It. 5y

LapReader @julesG Howdy partner! Can you recommend a good one? 5y
julesG Heya! You beat me to it partner. 😉 I liked the tiny story called Eric, which is from a collection of stories by Tan. 5y
julesG But Ryan is right, the art often is better than the stories. 5y

Artist Shaun Tan has a wonderful way of instilling the absurd and the surreal into situations that look like our lives with beautiful, wit, and wonder. This children's book takes on the "what I did on my summer vacation" essay with a list of rules. A delightful book for kids and adults.

Jee_HookedOnBookz I love the illustrations! 6y

The style of this book will feel quite familiar to those acquainted with Tans work. It gets quite dark in this story and I am never entirely sure if children would take to this imagery. But as an admirer of illustration I love this and keep flicking idly through and taking in new aspects. The giant red eyed red rabbit feels like something lifted from Atwoods Oryx and Crake

I am slowly running out of Shaun Tan's to review !

Holy shit this book is beautiful. The art takes my breath away and the story is so not what you would expect from a children's book- mostly because there is no story, per se. The book is just what it says: rules. But the pictures take it to a whole different level. Surreal and astonishing.
