The Dark Side: A Novel | Danielle Steel
10 posts | 11 read | 7 to read
In her new novel, Danielle Steel tells a riveting story of the dark side of motherhood. Zoe Morgans childhood was marked by her younger sisters tragic illness, watching as her parents dedicated themselves completely to her final days and then divorced. As a young woman driven by these painful memories, Zoe sets the bar high for herself, studying hard and pursuing a career in the nonprofit world, where her deep compassion for disadvantaged children finds a focus. When Zoe falls in love and has her own child, she is determined to be a perfect mother as well. But before long, old scars long dormant begin to pull Zoe to the edge of an abyss too terrifying to contemplate. As Zoe is haunted by the ghosts of the past, her story will become a race against time and a tale of psychological suspense that no reader will soon forget.

This suspenseful novel starts when Zoe was only 10. Her little sister died from leukemia and both parents were devastated so deeply that Zoe was mostly ignored and had to fend for herself. After the parents‘ divorce, she found her soulmate and became a mother. That‘s when the darkness appeared…hard to put down. Fascinating.

When I was younger I would always see my Mom and older women reading Danielle Steele. Now as a woman I find I enjoy her too.

I don‘t read very much Danielle Steel, but this one caught my attention. Then my godmother said it was hard to put down, and she was right! Very detailed and slow-going, but worth it!

When I read "tale of psychological suspense" in the cover description on this book, I almost didn't want to start it. It's not my favorite genre. But being a DS book I went for it. Masterful writing, suspenseful reading, fascinating subject, excellent book! Exploring connections between past & present and how one may affect the other. The difficult subject matter of munchausen by proxy syndrome. I didn't expect to like it, I ended up loving it!

Mehso-so

The main character Zoe had a younger sister die when she was a child. And I know that would affect a person but not to the level where her personality went to. Young mother's make mistakes and sometimes have weird ideas but that does not mean they are out to harm their children. Only the last move would be considered harm on purpose. Just because you are young and make mistakes does not mean you have munchausen syndrome by proxy.
