Some Rain Must Fall
Some Rain Must Fall: My Struggle | Karl Ove Knausgaard
10 posts | 14 read | 2 reading | 6 to read
At twenty, Karl Ove moves to Bergen. As the youngest student to be admitted to the prestigious Writing Academy, he arrives full of excitement and writerly aspirations. Soon though, he is stripped of youthful illusions. His writing is revealed to be puerile and clichd, and his social efforts are a dismal failure. Awkward in company and hopeless with women, he drowns his shame in drink and rock music. Then, little by little, things take a brighter turn. He falls in love, gives up writing in favour of the steady rewards of literary criticism, and the beginnings of an adult life take shape. That is, until his self-destructive binges and the irresistible lure of the writers struggle pull him back. In this fifth instalment of the My Struggle cycle, Karl Ove discloses his personal and often deeply shameful battles with introversion, alcohol abuse, infidelity and artistic ambition. Knausgaard writes with unflinching honesty to deliver the full drama of everyday life, in a breathless novel poised between a desperate yearning to be good, and the terrible power of transgression.

This is the best one yet....

To anyone even remotely interested in reading these, I definitely recommend they take the time to do it. While it‘s a big time investment, it‘s an easy read, not hard or challenging by any means, but I‘ve found it a profound experience—a total journey through what it means to be human in these modern times—and incredibly transformative. I can‘t wait to get into the next one.

My Struggle is that every time I start a book in the series I realize how much I dislike the young Karl Ove. But then his beautiful writing sucks me in...

Still utterly mesmerizing. This penultimate volume is funny, disturbing and sad. We revisit his father's death and dredge up old infidelities. Karl Ove is as narcissistic as ever but he's also generous and reverent about art and literature and his friends who are artists. Weirdly, he finishes this volume by reading a couple of Ian Rankin books, so it's possible that his literary tastes aren't quite as refined as I imagined.

bookandcat I adore this series. I'm going to be reading book 4 soon. Book five paperback isn't released here til April! 8y

#firsteverlitsypost was this quote: "Was art only an inner phenomenon? Something that moved within us and between us, all that which we couldn't see but marked us, indeed, which was us?" I posted this frozen view from my room at the historic Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC, where I'll return next February. #booktober

Hobbinol @ValerieAndBooks One of my favorite places to read is in a rocking chair in front of one of their HUGE fireplaces with the rocks inscribed with literary quotes! Autumn is a perfect time to visit. Thanks for commenting. 8y

Team Knausgaard. When I decided to read Book 1, I made a decision then to read them all. It has been a joy.

Jillreads I'm only on book 2 but I'm enjoying the ride! 9y
