I promised an 8th grader I would read this so I could make her an AR quiz on it. It was weird. I felt the topics it attempted to tackle were admirable, and the characters were complicated and flawed in a good way. However, the final character “live interest” relationship was lazy and the book overall did not execute on all it promised. Ambitious and fell a bit flat for me. The 8th grader liked it :)

Has anyone else read or heard of this book? I'm almost done and I'd love to hear what other people think because as of this time I feel....mostly confused by it.

Fancypants @Ms_Ashley thanks! Honestly I would love to hear why you enjoyed it - not because I didn't but because I've read some not so great reviews about it and I think that's in part where my confusion lies. 8y

Ms_Ashley @Fancypants absolutely understand that one. Let's see, so the book appealed to me because the concept was one I'd been familiar with in my circles, sometimes wondering if ethnicity were not a factor would things come easier. However, what I truly enjoyed about it was the way she intertwined the main characters false self view with her fervent and personal relationship with Jesus. I feel in some ways that I knew the ending would show her that 8y
Ms_Ashley She was exactly who she should be, just as God made her, but I loved how Randi Pink got there! She didn't place her in small scale scenarios or strictly teen angsty situations but she expanded her character. She also used her brother and her nemesis/love interest to show how diverse the character of other African Americans around our main character are. I mean her brother is a certified genius being courted by several Ivy Leagues and the one guy 8y
Ms_Ashley She was sure was the epitome of all unsavory stereotypes turns out to be deep and contemplative in a way she couldn't imagine, while the other students she revered for their outward appearance turn out to be more loathsome than she could have ever dreamt. The book was about being exactly who you are, holding onto yourself and your faith in hard times and not confusing what is outwardly evident with what lies beneath. 8y
Fancypants @Ms_Ashley thank you! I totally get that. I'm not always a fan of the religious aspect being a prominent role but I can totally see/understand how that really helped this story and really appreciate your view, it helped me figure out my own confusion! 8y

Really thought provoking and made me cry. Lovely story of a black teen in Alabama who gets her "wish" to be white and then how she finds out what's really important. First novel, I'm impressed with it!

This is out today and can't decide if I want to buy or borrow--I think it will be especially resonant for my students, and can't wait to share it with them. After I get my grubby little hands on it!
