More like a collection of anecdotes than a true memoir. The latest in a series of memoirs written by Jennifer Finney Boylan, resulting in a read that had interesting moments & good emotional stories, but felt a little like scratching the surface or gathering up leftovers. I did enjoy parts of the stories & could identify with the ways that dogs help teach us about life. I just was disappointed it didn't lend itself to more emotional investment.
I‘ve been both looking forward to reading this and dreading reading this since I saw the author speak at a conference in January. I was ugly crying just hearing about the book, I suspect this will wreck me.
I think the thing I liked most about Good Boy was the brutal honesty and the growth that resulted when the truth was faced. There were so many times that I felt such an incredible sadness in regards to her feelings and thoughts, along with the desperate measures contemplated in the hope of obtaining a sense of normalcy. There were also many moments of genuine laughter, especially centered around the antics of Matt the Mutt.
I thought this book was going to be more focused on the relationship with the dogs. I felt like the beginning was super slow and the story just took awhile to go anywhere. It felt very scattered to me. I love the author‘s bravery and story, but the writing wasn‘t great for me.
Cute premise/set up. The author retells episodes throughout her life related to the dog she owned at the time. A sweet, feel good memoir. #Edelweiss #arc
I was going to wait until closer to the release date to read JFB's new book, but I can't. I love her writing too much. About to brew some tea from August Uncommon and settle in with this memoir tonight. 🥰

Oh, this book. I adored every damn word of it. So wise and so funny and so true. Please read it when it comes out in April. You‘ll thank me, I promise.
I can already tell this is goi long to be one of my favorite books of the year.
Just so darn good. I inhaled this like a dog who tips over the treat jar in an empty house. Boylan tells stories of her childhood, teenage years, and adult life through the lens of dog ownership. In some stories dogs are central, and often misbehaving. In others, they are bit players. I laughed a lot, and also learned more about the trans journey. 4 enthusiastic stars.

I love JFB so I was totally excited to get this galley in my mailbox today! 🥰 #bookmail #memoir #transauthors #doglovers
No puppies at our house due to allergies, but I have wonderful memories of my pre-marriage dogs. It‘s also fortuitous that this book landed with me the day after a family member came out to us as a trans man. Hoping this‘ll be a book to share with people just learning to be allies. #celadonreads #goodboy
“Dogs help us understand ourselves: who we are, who we‘ve been. They teach us what it means to love and be loved. They bear witness to our joys and sorrows; they lick the tears from our faces. And when our backs are turned, they steal a whole roasted chicken off the supper table. “ ~Jennifer Finney Boylan
I love both memoirs and dog books so I‘m thrilled to have the opportunity to read and review this upcoming publication from Celadon Books!
