Deaf in America
Deaf in America | Carol A. Padden, Tom Humphries
4 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
Written by authors who are themselves Deaf, this unique book illuminates the life and culture of Deaf people from the inside, through their everyday talk, their shared myths, their art and performances, and the lessons they teach one another. Padden and Humphries employ the capitalized "Deaf" to refer to deaf people who share a natural language--American Sign Language (ASL)--and a complex culture, historically created and actively transmitted across generations.

Mehso-so

It was interesting to read about Deaf culture, though I feel I barely scratched the surface. Most intriguing was the introduction of Deaf poetry, and how through ASL beautiful and powerful plays on words can be made. I'd like to learn more about that.

It is perhaps polemical to say that the performances of Deaf people showed that they always knew the potential of the language, but they did, after all, know. What we now see is a new reflectiveness about their language and a new vocabulary for describing it.

Decoy book deployed so I can read the book I actually want to read at the moment. I think she's on to me, though.

I asked my husband if he knew there was Black sign language (as opposed to ASL), and he said he did not. We are both interested in sign language and Deaf culture, so he suggested I read a book from his shelf. Pretty excited about really getting into it. 👍🏽
