I Survived the Great Molasses Flood, 1919 (I Survived #19)
I Survived the Great Molasses Flood, 1919 (I Survived #19) | Lauren Tarshis
7 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
One hundred years ago, a killer wave of molasses struck a crowded Boston neighborhood. Discover the story of this strange disaster in the next book in the New York Times bestselling I Survived series. There were warning signs that the molasses tank would break. The steel sides moaned and groaned. Molasses oozed from its seams. But the people of Boston's North End -- mostly poor immigrants -- were powerless to complain to the big molasses company. On a bright January day in 1919, the tank finally broke and almost three million gallons of molasses rushed the neighborhood. At 15 feet tall, 160 feet wide, and traveling at 35 miles per hour, the gooey wave was more destructive than any flood of water would have been. Lauren Tarshis tells the riveting story of one child who was swept up in the sticky storm and lived to tell the tale.

The public library added Playaways to the collection. My home has never been this quiet since before they were born. 😂

Sharpeipup I was just thinking about playaways today. I haven‘t seen them in my library recently. 4y
Branwen They are super popular in my library! 4y

A compelling story surrounding an odd tragedy in Boston. In 1919, a vat containing 2 million gallons of molasses exploded killing 21 people and injuring 150. The fictional story tells of Carmen, an Italian immigrant, and her father, who succumbs to the Spanish Influenza. A great read for #BBRC #middlegrade #LessThan120Pages

IamIamIam @tpixie That's crazy! I'd think this would be a huge talking point! 5y
tpixie @IamIamIam right???!! 5y
riversong153 My kid loves this series! 5y
IamIamIam @riversong153 This is my first read but I know it's always a big hit at the book fairs! What's your child's favorite book in the series? 5y
riversong153 @IamIamIam the one about the Titanic. 5y
IamIamIam @riversong153 Excellent choice!!! That was summer reading for my son before 4rd grade and he actually enjoyed it! The Titanic is my preferred disaster... that's weird, right? 😬 5y
riversong153 @IamIamIam Not weird at all. Your talking to someone who loves true crime, so I completely get it! 5y

Is it sauce or gravy?!? Growing up, gravy was brown and sauce was red! 😂😂 What do actual Italians call it? We're just transplants! Lol

Geenie Gravy...my mom makes tomato gravy with pepper steak. 👌 5y
JackOBotts My Italian/Sicilian grandmother called it gravy...👵🏼🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y
IamIamIam Tomato gravy sounds better than plain gravy, @Yoshi-and-a-book. We're Sicilian also but my grandmother never said gravy, @JackOBotts. I only heard that when I started dating my husband because his family called it gravy, lol! 5y
AmyG I know a few Italians that call sauce...gravy. 5y
rather_be_reading ive only heard it calles gravy on tv 5y

I lived just outside Boston from 2nd grade through the end of 6th grade and oddly, I had never heard of The Great Molasses Flood until I tuned in to an episode of Drunk History. Thanks @Ash.on.the.line for tuning me into this I Survived edition! I thoroughly enjoyed this strange piece of Boston history!

Ash.on.the.line How awesome! Now I need to read it myself! 😄 5y
cozypunk This is already on my TRB list, but now I'm doubly excited to look up the Drunk History episode. Thanks for the lead! 5y
Cortg @dwRavenPuff OMG, my daughter was playing it on her phone last weekend for my dad 😂 5y

A new one to me-molasses and human ignorance for the method of storage

MidnightBookGirl I have heard about this! What a terrible way to die! 5y
Panic70 I‘ve read some of the I survived series, but I don‘t think my 9 year old would enjoy them. This one seems scary. 5y
Kenyazero It's a bizarre happening in American history, for sure! A preventable tragedy. 5y
Eggs @MidnightBookGirl @Panic70 @Kenyazero Preventable indeed-they were storing molasses improperly for use in explosives bc high alcohol content-ugh 5y

Found this while browsing hoopla for my next read, and I was hit with a random memory. I remember in maybe 1st or 2nd grade we read a story about a molasses spill and I always had it in my head, it was a true story and most of the adults around me said it wasn‘t for years! I can‘t believe it is true and I‘m totally rubbing it in! 😂 This is random but I had no where else to tell this silly story!

Cortg I lived just outside Boston from 2nd grade through 6th grade and I never heard the story (neither had my siblings) until I saw an episode about it on Drunk History 🤓 I'm fascinated, so I may have to pick this book up! I love the I Survived Series!

It feels like I Survived is scrapping the bottom of the disaster barrell. However, this is an event I have never heard of, and I want to know more!
