The Rose and The Beast
The Rose and The Beast | Francesca Lia Block
6 posts | 18 read | 15 to read
With language that is both lyrical and distinctly her own, Francesca Lia Block turns nine fairy tales inside out. Escaping the poisoned apple, Snow frees herself from possession to find the truth of love in an unexpected place. A club girl from L.A., awakening from a long sleep to the memories of her past, finally finds release from its curse. And Beauty learns that Beasts can understand more than men. Within these singular, timeless landscapes, the brutal and the magical collide, and the heroine triumphs because of the strength she finds in a pen, a paintbrush, a lover, a friend, a mother, and finally, in herself.

Mehso-so

FLB is really a good writer. Her words are "lyrical" and magical at the same time even if she was talking about something totally un-magical. Its actually more poetry than prose which is the root of my problems. Half of the time I just don't understand what she is saying! Since the fairy tales are also shorten, I find myself looking for more. I especially liked to read more about "Ice" and "Tiny".

Pickpick

Francesca Lia Block is one of my favorite writers since my teen years. She has such a unique and beautiful style and really brought something dark and fine to some classic fairytales. This was a great book for a quick read and really different. I definitely liked this one!

GypsyKat I love fairytales and fairytale retellings, this is definitely making the TBR list! 👍🏼 8y
