The King of Lies
The King of Lies | John Hart
11 posts | 20 read | 8 to read
John Hart creates a literary thriller that is as suspenseful as it is poignant, a riveting murder mystery layered beneath the southern drawl of a humble North Carolina lawyer. When Work Pickens finds his father murdered, the investigation pushes a repressed family history to the surface and he sees his own carefully constructed faade begin to crack. Work's troubled sister, her combative girlfriend, his gold digging socialite wife, and an unrequited lifelong love join a cast of small town characters that create no shortage of drama in this extraordinary, fast-paced suspense novel. Hart's mastery of prose and plot belie his newcomer status as he explores the true heart of a man. An illuminating anatomy of a murder and the ripple effect it produces within a family and a community, The King of Lies is a stunning debut.

I like John Hart‘s writing. He keeps this story moving along at a pretty good clip. I‘m not sure about the protagonist, Jackson Workman Pickens, as he has real issues, but he is brought very much alive. I think I know who the murderer is...but I‘m always wrong. Ha! Thank you to #NorthCarolina author Curt Finch for recommending this author to me!

Mrsann2000 Really like ready his books! 6y

His writing is like a balm, and his characters are complex and interesting. He knows how to keep you turning pages without relying on the traditional thriller way of using fast paced action. I've binge read 4 of his books and am going to start a fifth soon. Highly recommend!

Current read! I like the writing of this #NorthCarolina author. I‘ve read a previous book of his, and this book seems promising right from the start. #Lawyers, murder, marriage gone awry...Let‘s see what else happens! 😃

The last 4 books I read were all just so-so for me. I feel like I need something that grabs me from the start & makes me want to stay up all night to finish. These 3 are all on my TBR for this year's reading challenges & I think they might all fit the bill for what I'm looking for. But which of the 3 should I pick to start on my 4-hour drive tomorrow?? 🤷‍♀️🤔

Texreader The tagged book looks good! 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes I loved Just Kids but it was more a sweet meditative read than a grab you and rush you to the end kind of book. Maybe best to save it for later? It deserves the space it needs to be enjoyed imo. 😌 7y
Cinfhen I'm guessing the Karin Slaughter should do the trick! 7y

Cinfhen I agree with @Natasha.C.Barnes Just Kids was a slower read/ audio - I did a combo & it took a bit of time for me to get through (in a good way) 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes @Cinfhen I finished it a few days ago but it's stuck with me so strongly...I feel myself in a bit of a melancholic haze through not being able to let go. I'm gonna have to snap out of it but I think it's a testament to the purity of the feelings she was able to express. (edited) 7y
Cinfhen Her song writing skills really shine through! And it's such a fascinating time in history @Natasha.C.Barnes (edited) 7y
kspenmoll Just kids was wonderful, but not sure about audio- especially when driving. But then I get distracted easily when driving so I do not listen to books. 7y
Theresa @Texreader @Natasha.C.Barnes @Cinfhen @kspenmoll Thanks, All, for the feedback, it really helped. I think I'll go with Karin Slaughter. 7y

Coaching some athletes in about a half hour; before I crank up the music and get things rolling, I get a little down time. And, I think we can agree, down time = reading time....whenever, wherever we can get it!
