Historical fiction set in 1699 in the Carolina colonies with mystery and a witch, but something even more darker haunting the town of Fount Royal. The writing is excellent. It reads fast. Keeps your interest. Can‘t put this down. Glad I learned about this from Mike‘s Book Reviews on YouTube. My first read of 2024. Can see a ton more McCammon in my future.

4 ⭐ (One of those stars is for the narrator alone.)

Excellent audiobook...which made it possible to ignore some minor annoyances.

I was just about to get up and grab my book when this guy decided to sit on my lap. Ah well. Guess I'll just have to listen to the tagged audiobook. BTW, I can't seem to stop listening to it, but there are some 🙄 moments that only male authors seem to be guilty of (apologies to any males reading.)

First book in a series of historical novels set in 1699 in colonial America starring young magistrate's clerk Matthew Corbett. A struggling settlement is convinced a run of bad luck and murders is down to hot young widow Rachel being a witch. Corbett sets out to prove them wrong, making some powerful enemies on the way. Great fun.

Libby1 It‘s ALWAYS the hot young widow‘s fault. 😳 7y
wanderinglynn And of course the hot young widow is a witch! 😆 7y

Such a night owl that sometimes I'm early.
Rain is a necessary evil. Snow is that thing they are burdened with in the north and when it comes to Virginia we act like the sky is falling down.

SilversReviews LOL on your night owl comment. 7y
RadicalReader @Eggbeater do you like things mixed into your pancakes or do you prefer them plain? 7y
Eggbeater @RadicalReader I like the harvest grain and nut pancakes from iHop with butter pecan syrup. 7y

I know the old-timey vocabulary sounds fake, but my god... I bought the first volume of this book (thinking that it just meant that it was book one and they just wanted it to be volume one for fun). Once I reached the end of that volume, I could not deal with the suspense. I ordered volume two and read the whole thing in one sitting. I never do that. The way it keeps you guessing, the imagery... This book is compelling to the end.
