'It is the saddest night, for I am leaving and not coming back.'Jay is leaving his partner and their two sons. As the long night before his departure unfolds he remembers the ups and downs of his relationship with Susan. In an unforgettable, and often pitiless, reflection of their time together he analyses the agonies and the joys of trying to make a life with another person.

Pickpick

I had a knee jerk reaction of irritation as the protagonist describes how he will be leaving his wife and 2 small children . He is selfish, self absorbed , foolish. But he knows this .It‘s a painful excavation of his inner life , as he describes the somewhat cliched reasons for leaving . Well written with moments of black comedy, pitch perfect descriptions , painful truths . A difficult book especially if you are middle aged and married .

Two more days until the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival #UWRF18 👏📚🌴. I am going with a group of friends, none of whom are on Litsy.

Ubud is in Bali, Indonesia. It‘s the 15th year of the festival which was started following the notorious Bali bombings as a celebration of human resiliency, rights and of course literature.

I wonder whether any of you are going to be there? 🙏📚😊

JennyM I wish I was. Enjoy 😊 6y

Bailedbailed

Bailed....for now. I really enjoyed The Nothing so I thought I‘d try another book of his. The guy can write, there‘s no doubt but I just can‘t right now. The MC in this book sounds a lot like the MC from The Nothing. Also, I‘m all for expanding my vocabulary. Lucubrate shows up in The Nothing and it also shows up in here. He‘s the same writer and people use the same words all the time. It turned me off, I know, I‘m just crazy like that.🤷🏽‍♂️

Mehso-so

The narrator is a self-absorbed, arrogant prick. I felt like a voyeur, "watching" not only his most intimate physical acts but also his emotions and very personal thoughts. He is brutally honest, which is fascinating and disgusting at the same time. From a narrative point of view, it's great - one night, inner monologue- content- and sympathy-wise I just kept thinking that his wife is so much better off without him and what an a.. the narrator is!

Yes, it is a controversial novel, or a controversial subject, but I loved it. In a way it is very recognizable and that's very confronting. Beautifully written thoughts on relationships, kids and the eternal search for something more. #1001books
