This was my #China pick for #Booked2022, partly because it was written and published in China and translated. Hua is a novelist, but this piece of non-fiction chooses 10 words that he thinks are emblematic of Chinese history and culture beginning with his childhood during the 60s and 70s Cultural Revolution to the present. Each essay interweaves personal experience, social and political analysis, and humor. It was a real eye-opener for me. ⬇️

Singout Also my #Nonfiction2022 #OutofLeftField: this describes his fiction style, although I haven't read it yet, and tackling issues that have made this book #banned in Chine (it gets labelled as “fiction“ on some sites to slide under the wire.) 3y

Funny, engaging and informative about the life and culture in contemporary China. Now I want to read Yu Hua‘s novels.

Brilliant insights and snapshots of Chinese life and history. Well written - with great clarity and honesty. The audiobook is wonderful also.

From my TBR shelf, written by one of #China ‘s major contemporary novelist, the book provides an insight into the Chinese experience over the last few decades, told through personal accounts and stories that illustrate the country‘s economic rise and social transformation. Each account/story is framed by a word/phrase common in the Chinese everyday spoken language.
