One of the 2023 reading challenges I'm going to do is #TBRDeckOfCards!

I've come up with 52 subgenres that I haven't read. Then when I draw a card at the end of the month, I'll have a new to me subgenre to read!

For January, I drew gothic romance and decided on “Down Comes the Night.“ Now, technically this is YA gothic romance fantasy but it looks good!

#TBRDeckOfCards was popular in 2022, do I need to tag someone? TIA!

Bklover Me me me! 2y
Coffeymuse @Bklover I'd be glad to tag you in this! 2y
Bklover Already selected a book. (Just googled gothic romances) I‘m going to read A Stitch In Time because it‘s already on my kindle. 😊 2y
Coffeymuse @Bklover That looks good! Let me know if you like it! 2y

It's a Gothic Fantasy Romance with an indecisive heroine who will make you roll your eyes so much, you won't be able to see straight. The prose borders on being purple. The love interest, Hal Cavendish is the only saving grace. Actually, he's the most enjoyable part of the book. The pacing is slow. Wouldn't say it was the most enjoyable read but it wasn't terrible either

I really enjoyed this moody, atmospheric fantasy novel. The slow burn romance between the two main characters and the mystery of what was really happening at the manor kept my interest and I found myself wanting to read more. I highly recommend Down Comes The Night by Allison Saft for young adult fans of fantasy, mystery and romance.

14/100, 1.5☆, It was by sheer force of will that I kept myself from dnf'ing this book. This was one of my most anticipated pre-orders for this year and I was so disappointed. It just was not for me. The premise is exactly what I would want to read about, a romantic fantasy, with a side of beauty and the beast retelling. The characters did not make sense. The time frame in which this took place was absurd. I wish I could have enjoyed this one.

LazyOwl That's disappointing, especially when you've hyped something up beforehand 4y

Ooooh spooky scary skeletons. Maybe. Slight gothic vibes, magic systems, raging wars and found family all come together in a pile of goodness in this one. Wren was a great MC, at I loved her interactions with basically everyone (well-developed side-characters = joy!) but especially Hal - thought I didn't care much for the romantic side-plot. My favourite bit? Wren has /emotions/! And she's (mostly) not afraid to show them!

A little cheaty to claim this as my first finish of #24in48, but I did just let my life be consumed by the last 25% of it just now. It was so good.

Read some Serial Reader-issues I'd gotten behind on while procrastinating on getting out of bed as well as some Flavia de Luce this morning. Time for a snack and then on to Mikki Kendall's Hood Feminism!

This is a YA fantasy romance featuring a healer (Wren) who, as an illegitimate niece to the queen, was raised in an abbey before serving in the military during a war with a neighboring country. This had vibes of Beauty and the Beast/Cinderella as Wren changed her stance about the “monster” enemy soldier Hal, and her aunt was portrayed as evil and conniving. There‘s a truly evil mad scientist and a creepy castle thrown in as well. In the end, 🔻

robinb this story is about gaining self confidence and the courage to be one‘s self rather than everyone‘s ideal of you. Pretty good overall. 3.5/5⭐️ (edited) 4y

I‘ve just finished my last book of 2020, and it was a good one! Thanks Goodreads for the ARC. The story takes place in a gothic setting, with queens and castles. Its a story about magic and healing, an action story and a love story all in one. I recommend this book to all who love the Fantasy genre. Even if fantasy isn‘t your thing, I‘d say that this book is worth a read.
