Light It Up | Kekla Magoon
11 posts | 4 read | 7 to read
Told in a series of vignettes from multiple viewpoints, Kekla Magoon's Light It Up is a powerful, layered story about injustice and strengthas well as an incredible follow-up to the highly acclaimed novel How It Went Down. A girl walks home from school. She's tall for her age. She's wearing her winter coat. Her headphones are in. She's hurrying. She never makes it home. In the aftermath, while law enforcement tries to justify the response, one fact remains: a police officer has shot and killed an unarmed thirteen-year-old girl. The community is thrown into upheaval, leading to unrest, a growing movement to protest the senseless taking of black lives, and the arrival of white supremacist counter demonstrators.

This book really made me stop and think and I loved every moment of it. My favorite part was how every chapter was either a differnt character or news or twitter post. It kept the information rolling and made the impact more heartfelt.

Light it Up, published in 2019 was a very heavy read. This book went into the details of the aftermath of a 13 year old being killed. this book comes in many different viewpoints given each chapter is the voice of someone else. This book did not shy away from details and is the perfect book to portray how our world treats others without respect.

This book took place in the same neighborhood as the book “How it Went Down.” A thirteen year old black girl is walking quickly home from school with headphones in. But she never makes it home when a white cop shots and kills her. Told from multiple viewpoints of people from the neighborhood. This book was a powerful story about social injustice and strength.

CBee What happened to baby kitty?? 😕 4y
Lovesbooks87 @CBee her tail got stepped on by accident and the tip of her tail came off. She had to have two inches of her tail amputated about a week and a half ago. She is doing really good and the vet said her tail looks really good and she can have the stitches taken out on Wednesday! 4y
CBee @Lovesbooks87 poor thing!!! I‘m glad she‘s doing better now. ♥️ 4y

“Maybe this is what it‘s like to be married with children. Feeling needed, safe, loved, worried, scared for what the world would do to them. Feeling strong and weak all at once.”

Pretty good summation for me.

This was an ARC that I picked up at the ALA conference over the summer. I didn‘t realize that it involved the same characters and neighborhood as How it Went Down, which i haven‘t read yet. It doesn‘t matter- this was excellent on its own. A 13 year old black girl is “mistakenly” shot and killed by the police. This book is a series of vignettes from multiple characters, all with different experiences and points of view. 👇👇👇

AmberWB The way Kekla Magoon wrote this book really did an amazing job showing how and why there are so many extremes when it comes to issues such as this. Very glad I read it and hope that there is a 3rd book on the works. 5y
Chelleo I picked this up at ALA too and am just getting around to reading it! 🤦🏾‍♀️ 4y
