pickThis is a great HF book you didnt know you needed to read, for grades 4-8. It won the Newberry medal for childrens literature in 2012 and the Scott O‘Dell Award for historical fiction! This book is about a 13 year old boy who is grounded for the summer and forced to do some peculiar work with an old lady in his town.
This book would be great to be utilized as a RA or LC, as it is best to talk about the different hard topics as a class.

I haven‘t read anything by this author before, but I couldn‘t resist adding a signed Newbery medalist to our collection. And yes, my son‘s way too young for this one, but I got it signed to him and I‘ll just borrow it in the meantime. 📚📚📚The author was telling the kid ahead of me that this is inspired by his hometown and people he knew — which now has me completely intrigued.

pickI recommend Jack Gantos to my middle schoolers all the time, and I was happy to learn that this was just as silly and fun as his Joey Pigza books!
I started listening to this driving home from my in-laws and it literally had me giggling out loud. Gantos is one of the few authors who does a great job narrating his own books.
pickFunny! I loved Jack's character. His personality was adorable. It was entertaining to read about Jack's growth over that one impactful summer as he learned the history of his town, Norvelt, and the people in it.
I'm not sure if this counts as #sobaditsgood. This is the only Newbery winner of those I've read so far that I haven't liked. But it won the award, so obviously somebody thought it was good! #maybookflowers

pickMy library system is hosting a lecture from Jack Gantos next month, so I thought I'd better read up. This was a pretty delightful tale of history and boyhood and western Pennsylvania mining country in the 1960s, and now I have to try to figure out how much is autobiographical, since the main character's name is also Jack Gantos!
