Zero Sum Game
Zero Sum Game | S. L. Huang

Cas Russell is good at math. Scary good. The vector calculus blazing through her head lets her smash through armed men twice her size and dodge every bullet in a gunfight. She can take any job for the right price and shoot anyone who gets in her way. As far as she knows, she's the only person around with a superpower . . . but then Cas discovers someone with a power even more dangerous than her own. Someone who can reach directly into people's minds and twist their brains into Moebius strips. Someone intent on becoming the world's puppet master. Someone who's already warped Cas's thoughts once before, with her none the wiser. Cas should run. Going up against a psychic with a god complex isn't exactly a rational move, and saving the world from a power-hungry telepath isn't her responsibility. But she isn't about to let anyone get away with violating her brain -- and besides, she's got a small arsenal and some deadly mathematics on her side. There's only one problem . . . She doesn't know which of her thoughts are her own anymore.

#20Series20Days Day 4: Cas Russell

My newest favorite series is a set of action thrillers featuring a hero so crazy good at math that she can calculate trajectories of bullets in flight. Plausibility is low but bonkers-fun is over the top, with the added bonus that the author is herself a mathematician, so: math jokes. Which I guess won't appeal to everybody but it sure does to me.

@Andrew65

Andrew65 I do like the sound of these! 4y

Bailedbailed

A case of it's not you, it's me. I made it 60 pages in. I have a hard time imagining action sequences in my head and this book is non-stop action. (Obviously this is a plus for others). In theory I like an anti-heroine whose superpower is she's super good at math making her the ultimate fighter but in practice I wasn't interested. The author is queer but no queer characters. (Totally okay but another reason I might continue to read is not there).

DaveGreen7777 It might seem odd that I stacked this book even though you bailed on it, but “anti-heroine whose superpower is math” just sounds so intriguing to me! 😀📚 5y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @DaveGreen7777 I hope you like it! I really didn't think there was anything wrong with it, it just wasn't for me. If you like thrillers I think it will be a win for you! 5y

I was debating between these queer science fiction and fantasy books for my next read, so I asked my partner to choose for me based on the title and cover alone. He chose Zero Sum Game, so here I go! I don't usually read thriller type books so this one will be something different. #QueerBooks #LGBTQBooks #LGBTQ #ScienceFiction #Fantasy

diovival Stacked The House in the Cerulean Sea. Instantly drawn to it. 5y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @diovival yeah the cover is so whimsical! 5y

Pretty good thriller. The gimmick is that the protagonist is a math genius and that allows her to quickly evade bullets and plan escape routes. Overall, just a bit too outrageous plot turns for me to pick up the next one. #MountTBR #Audiobook

swynn Well dang. Sorry it didn't work for you, but yeah it's definitely over the top and I understand bouncing off its outrageousness. I've just finished the second in the series, and though I enjoyed it the excesses are not toned down -- so probably a good decision not to continue. 5y

Hell yes.

That's all I really want to say, but some context might be useful for those saying, "Hell what?" This is an over-the-top action thriller where math is a superpower and the pace starts at a sprint then speeds up. It pushed every single one of my buttons and thank goodness the next is available.

Like I said: Yes.

If you're looking for something brainy and action-packed, with a KICKASS heroine, this is the book for you my friend. Cas is basically a living weapon because of her math skills (just trust me) and though she works alone, she gets caught up in a big scary web and has to work with a great diverse cast of possible helpers to go after the Big Bad Guy. This is SO fun and different and I can't wait for more. 😍

Only 57 pages in and totally loving this. She also does very fancy math in her brain.

Most action novels come with a deal, if you‘re willing to suspend disbelief then you‘ll be paid off with some kick ass action. Zero Sum Game puts those disbelief suspending muscles to the test but in the end it‘s worth it. A complex conspiracy laden plot and weird quasi-reality super powers pepper what is basically a cool heroine kicking ass with math. It may give you a birds eye view of the top of over the top but it‘s a heck of a lot of fun.

Super hectic time for me so I‘ve fallen off my my posting but thought I‘d try and catch up with @MinDea #humpdaypost

1. Beer... (I may have cheated and took the second image.)
2. My bottle opener which inspired me to choose beer.
3. Thriller with a Sci-fi edge. Really good.
4. Love tater tots but they are one if the things I gave up when losing weight.
5. Enjoy going more than participating.

My awesome owl mug makes its debut alongside ZERO SUM GAME, which I need to finish so I can start one of my new Christmas romances!

I love that the mug is double sided so I can enjoy the owl no matter which hand I drink with.

britt_brooke Cute mug! 7y
xicanti @britt_brooke it's from my Litsy Secret Santa! 7y
emtobiasz I wish all mugs were double-sided like that! 7y
