The Cool Factor
The Cool Factor: A Guide to Achieving Effortless Style, with Secrets from the Women Who Have It | Andrea Linett
5 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
“An excellent idea for a book. . . . Next time I spend more than $40 on an article of clothing, I’ll run it by Linett first.” —The New York Times Book Review In a culture where trends are born and die every minute, maintaining style and effortlessness at every age requires that little extra something—the cool factor. Being “cool” isn’t about chasing trends or defying age but about following a few key guidelines. Yes, the cool factor is a skill that can be learned! In this photo-packed guide, Andrea Linett, a famed personal stylist and founding creative director of Lucky magazine, offers easy-to-implement, actionable tips that will change the way women dress. The tips are modeled by real-life style icons like Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth and Christene Barberich, founder of Refinery29, as Andrea highlights the ingenious ways in which they skillfully pile on layers, or dress up denim for work or a party. The book is organized into chapters that include wardrobe classics, denim, leather, suits, dressing up, and accessories, and features style hacks that turn an outfit into a masterpiece (choosing shoes that instantly slim you, combining tough and feminine pieces, and accessorizing a day-to-night look). Packed with useful lists and examples, this guide is the would-be stylish woman’s best friend.

Confession time! The bookriot journal has a challenge inside for guilty pleasures and mine is style books. I have no style and hate the idea of conformity when it comes to how people dress and the judgement it can imply in these kind of guides. I expected to roll my eyes with the title of this one and then saw she had Kim Gordon as one of the women inside who a style inspiration. Yea she‘s actually cool. Continue in comments

Weaponxgirl She picks a group of women who she thinks are stylish to illustrate her fashion points and I have to say I was happy to see a range of ages and women who aren‘t all white and willowy. As far as these types of books go it wasn‘t bad but there is always room for improvement when it comes to representation. 6y

In serious need of a style update, beginning with a few new pairs of jeans. I've been wearing the same 6 or 7 pairs of pants every week for the past several years and they're getting pretty ripped up. I hate shopping for pants 😕

readinginthedark I hate clothes shopping! Old Navy makes jean shopping way easier for me, because they have a style specifically for curves, as well as short sizes! 8y
AileenRR @readinginthedark How did you know?! I went to a few places and Old Navy is where I ended up buying new jeans 😊 8y
readinginthedark @AileenRR 😆See? That's the only place I can find any without spending two+ hours. 8y

It was refreshing to see women my age and older being held up as paragons of fashion. I really enjoyed reading this.
