This is incredibly inventive. A creative and richly drawn world filled with magic and mythical creatures. The only fault I see in this is how every creature she encountered can speak her language, definitely for young readers - some bits reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland.

Sharing books by black authors during the month of July. I will add the synopsis from Goodreads below and in the comments.
I know many of you have posted about and read books by her but I haven‘t seen much about this one-her debut.
n the northern Ooni Kingdom, fear of the unknown runs deep, and children born dada are rumored to have special powers. Thirteen-year-old Zahrah Tsami feels like a normal girl -- ⬇️

JoScho she grows her own flora computer, has mirrors sewn onto her clothes, and stays clear of the Forbidden Greeny Jungle. But unlike other kids in the village of Kirki, Zahrah was born with the telling dadalocks. Only her best friend, Dari, isn't afraid of her, even when something unusual begins happening -- something that definitely makes Zahrah different. The two friends investigate, edging closer and closer to danger. 4y
JoScho When Dari's life is threatened. Zahrah must face her worst fears alone, including the very thing that makes her different.

In this exciting debut novel by Nnedi Okorafor-Mbachu, things aren't always what they seem -- monkeys tell fortunes, plants offer wisdom, and a teenage girl is the only one who stands a chance at saving her best friend's life.

Pogue She is one of my favorite authors how have I not read this?!? 4y
JoScho @Pogue it is an older one-maybe 2005? 4y

#booktober day 12: A book I wish there was a sequel to. This book was so good and different. Ms Okorafor always takes the untraveled plot. The worlds she creates are so full and complete, you want to travel to them and live there and explore. #MGBooktober

It took me a minute to get into the book, but then I was hooked. A 13 year old magical Black girl comes of age while traveling through a dangerous jungle to rescue her dying friend. The characters are well-realized and the world building is phenomenal. (Note: this book takes place in the same universe as the novel Who Fears Death and the short stories The Winds of Harmattan and From the Lost Diary of TreeFrog7.) #historicallyaccuratedragons

A coming of age book, Fun and fast paced, packed with adventure! Kind of reminds me of Alice in Wonderland, but at the same time, totally diferent!

I thought this was a lovely, heart-warming coming of age story with great world building. I like that the character learns a lot about herself through her mostly solo adventures (with a few nudges from friends and some helpful creatures). The Greeny Jungle sounds amazing. This plant from my building at work reminded me of something you might see in a jungle.

This was a really great book. I enjoyed reading it and following Zahrah's journey-both through the forest and her personal development. Great character progression, great pace, and a great ending with just enough left open.

Not gonna lie...being a librarian (often) means you get to open book presents alllll the time. No matter whether they're new or replacements, books you hate or love or will never read or can't be cataloged fast enough, your Baker & Taylor delivery will always induce inner-squeeing.

LauraBrook I loved Baker & Taylor day at the library too! Even though I never unpacked anything myself, it was fun to watch what we got and shelve it later. 8y
