The Crown and the Arrow
The Crown and the Arrow: A Wrath & the Dawn Short Story | Renée Ahdieh
4 posts | 36 read | 17 to read
Seventy-one days and seventy-one nights had come and gone since Khalid began killing his brides. This dawn, Khalid would mark the loss of the seventy-second girl, Shahrzad al-Khayzuran. Khalid didn’t know how many more of these dawns he could take. And there was something about this latest girl that piqued his interest. Not only had she volunteered to marry him, but at their wedding ceremony, she had seemed not the least bit afraid. In fact, what he had seen in her eyes was nothing short of pure hatred. She was about to lose her life. Why wasn’t she afraid? Why did she hate him so? He had never before gone to his wife’s chambers before her death at dawn. Tonight would be different.

This is a short story that is basically a chapter that was cut from The Wrath and the Dawn. It gives insight into why Khalid goes to see Sharzad that first night. I enjoyed getting an early glimpse into Khalid's thoughts. It is clear why it was cut from the book, though - it would have given away too much too early on.

Following Khalid's POV on the day he marries Shahrzad, this brief novella adds some depth to the same scenes in The Wrath & the Dawn, but not much else. I'm sure it was a great teaser when it was released ahead of The Rose & the Dagger, & I appreciate that it was included in my #kindle edition of The Wrath & the Dawn.

Pickpick

This novella follows Khalid's POV on the day of his wedding to Shahrzad. It didn't really give any more detail than The Wrath and the Dawn, but it was nice to see it from his perspective. âââ

"Khalid opened his eyes. A girl stood at the entrance. She progressed toward him without hesitation. Oddly, Khalid's guards were not leading her... walking at a respectful distance. Almost as though they knew better than to lead this girl anywhere."
