Jazz will stop at nothing to save her brother.Their foster mother, Carol, has always been fanatical, but with Jazz grown up and out of the house, Carol takes a dangerous turn that threatens thirteen-year-old Joaquin's life. Over and over, child services fails to intervene, and Joaquin is running out of time. Then Jazz gets a blocked call from someone offering a solution. There are others like her--people the law has failed. They've formed an underground network of "helpers," each agreeing to eliminate the abuser of another. They're taking back their power and leaving a trail of bodies throughout Los Angeles--dubbed the Blackbird Killings. If Jazz joins them, they'll take care of Carol for good. All she has to do is kill a stranger.

🎧 Reminiscent of The Chain.

This story has a memorable badass MC in Jazz. She‘s the much older sister of Joaquin. They were taken in by a foster mom. Jazz is now much too old and out of the house but keeps here eye on her 13 yo little brother. DCFS turns blind eye after blind eye to Carol‘s increasingly bordering criminal parental behavior & now Jazz has a way to save her brother by killing a stranger.

I liked the MC.

Jazz is just trying to keep her brother safe from their foster mom and gets wrapped up in a murder for hire scheme in Los Angeles. Very fun read, couldn't put it down.

That was SO FUN! Her writing just flows and sucks you in and suddenly, you‘re like 200 pages in! I flew through this one.

A page-turner, yet I wasn't blown away. (Penance by Kanae Minato set a really high bar for all other thrillers I read.) Maybe it's the Kill Club plot 💉🎴 (there be holes), & the number of times Jazz was passive, got the crap beat outta her, & then other times she'd be a warrior, don't take no sh*t from anyone. Not sure if that's meant to show we can be strong in certain moments, weak in others?? 🤔

I'd definitely read another by Heard, though.

I am still mulling over the events in this book after finishing a day ago. Definitely a page-turner that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Woah. What a thrilling ride this was! The novel was fast-paced, kept me turning the pages, and when I wasn‘t, I kept thinking about Jazz. She is unlike any other protagonists in all the psychological thrillers I've read so far, a reliable narrator for one, and not an alcoholic! She‘s tough, no-nonsense, smart, funny and one helluva bad-ass!

What a story! This thriller/mystery kept me on the edge of my seat the whole book. Jasmine Benavides aka Jazz has tried everything through proper channels of police, CPS, etc. to help her younger brother, living with an abusive foster/adoptive mother Carol. A mysterious organization contacts Jazz, promising a "permanent" solution to Carol. The catch? For Carol to be killed, she has to kill a stranger's Carol. Relentless pacing, great characters!

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian Oh, and great #queer and working class LA representation. #QueerBooks #LGBTQBooks 5y
